MegaFlow Overflow

I have a tall 110G that came with an MegaFlow Overflow. On the AGA website, it says that the Overflow can handle "600GPH Max - 2400GPH Pump at 5' overhead". I looked at the rating for Mag 9.5, which is rated 2400GPH, and it says that at 5' overhead, it's 750GPH. What's the deal?

Anyone has this overfow? What do you use as the return pump?

Thanks

Sorry, the Mag9.5 was actually rated for 950GPH max but at 5' overhead, it's still 750GPH. Which site to trust? AGA or MarineDepot?

You can push a lot more flow than that with the Mega Flow.

I have a Mag 12 with about 3 feet head on my 90 gallon. No elbows and 1 Tee. I figure I am pushing about 1000 gph or so.

You can check Danner Mfg.'s website for pump info.

How do you have that Mag12 plumbed? Unless you are using 1.5" plumbing at a minimum, you are restricting flow. How do you only have 3' of head?

I have it plumbed with 1" flex tubing. The pump sits right under the plumbing for the return. I guess I wasn't thinking clearly about the plumbing going into the megaflow. But even still, I am only looking at about 3.5' head.

My stand isn't very tall, I didn't realize that I would have to defend my measurements to the exact inch.

I will measure it tonight to get the exact amount of head that I have.

Regardless, I was trying to make a point that the megaflows can handle much more then they state in thier literature.

I would just be careful with the pump selection - it is not just about making sure that your drain can handle the flow - too much flow through your sump is not a good idea.

It is generally recommended to have between 3x and 5x your tank volume pump through the sump per hour.

You need to boost in-tank circulation with a closed loop or powerheads however.

I would say if you like Eheim don't go biger than the 1260. And even smaller than that would not be a mistake in my opinion.

My point was I doubt that the Mag12 is pushing 1000GPH and that a megaflow can handle that much. Plumbing diameter has a huge effect on actual flow as well as head height.

The problem with that one return in the 1 megaflow overflow you have there, is that the 9.5 will push to much water through the one return. I had the AGA 90g w/ Megaflow Overflow, and tried the Mag 9.5 and just had to many bubbles coming back into the main tank. I used the Mag 7 w/4' of head and it worked wonderfully.

How big is your sump going to be, that could also be a factor, since water flowing to quickly through you sump will produce bubbles. You want to push about 3-5 times your tanks volume per hour through your sump, otherwise you skimmer is not skimming very well since the water flows through your sump to quickly.

I have a 75 with a mag 7 for a return into 2 feet of lockline spraybar with a DIY durso and it is perfect and very quiet.

Yep, I used the Mag 7 on my 90g and that is one thing that people in my reef club admired about my tank, it ran very quiet. You start trying to push more than 600gph through a durso in the Megaflow and it get's louder the more you try to push through it. That is why they rate it at 600gph, because 600gph is silent compared to pushing 700-750 through it.
