megaflow question

Hello, I was interested in getting a new tank, 90 gal with a megaflow. My question is what is a good pump for this ?
the megaflow is rated at 600 gph, but it says to use a pump rated for 2400 gph at 5 foot high
would the mag drive 24 (2400gph) be a good pump ?
thanks for any input.

the drain would never be able to keep up with a mag 24...ur best bet is using either a mag 7 (which i use) or a mag 9.5...and even the mag 9.5 may need to be throttled back.

If your sump is in the stand under the tank you are going to have about 4 feet of head. Most manufacturers have a chart that will show what thier pump flows at x number of feet of head.

I would not use a pump that moves much over 600 gph at whatever you calculate your head at. You will have to throttle it back, or recirculate it back excessively, wasting a lot of electricity.

Whatever you decide on, you dont want a lot of sump turnover. It will make the water flow past all your filtration, skimmer, etc. too fast to process efficiently.

I have a 76 Gal half circle with a Megaflow, and the 9.5 was too big for it. I just use my Mag 5 for right now, and everything seems to be ok.

The mag 5 are rate at 500 gph at 0 feet at 4 ft you'd be get 250 -300 gph - is your flow realy OK?, Just wondering

cepaw,
I have the same tank and I am runing a Mag 9.5 on it with a SCWD and it works pretty fine. If you are not going to use the SCWD then I would agree with PatMayo and j_beau_13 and use something with a flow similar to the mag 7.

Hope that helps,
Henry

if u want more flow use both bulkheads as drains that will give u more GPH.
wich ever pump u get make sure to use the right size pipe on the output of the pump, IME mag drive pumps work beter when u use 1 inch PVC or flex PVC if u use the clear hose u are loosing head right off the bat, i used to have a mag 18 on my old 125 & had it plum to 3/4 inch PVC some one mention that i was loosing head that way & i was like yeah right but one day i plumed it with 1 inch & i got so much more flow.
JME.

The flex pipe works good for me and I can move it to the location where it makes the least amount of noise. Where mine is now it's vitually silent. The MH light fan makes more noise. I like the quiet.

Regards,

Pat
