Melanurus + Pink Streaked Wrasse?

I've got a partially paralyzed Melanurus in my 50 cube -- Which I know is small... But his fast swimming days are behind him, and nobody would take him.

But he's still the dominant fish, and a wrasse. I really want a Pink Streaked (Pseudocheilinops ataenia) which *is* suitable for my tank. But I don't want him to get bullied..

Any thoughts on this? (And yes, i DID try to give him a larger home. Nobody wants a broken wrasse)

I have a 3 1/2 inch male Melanurus with a 4 inch male Yellow Flanked Wrasse in a Reefer 450. The Melanurus does squabble with him occasionally, but nothing major.

Oops my bad, I thought your post said Pink Margin Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus rubrimarginatus) which is of the Cirrhilabrus species.

No worries!

Although, I did want to say something about a trend I've noticed here in regards to some users not getting help.

I got this wrasse because she was the last fish in the raffle, nobody wanted her due to space / aggression. I decided to house her until she got a little bigger. At the time, when she was like 1.5" or so, she was put into my Biocube with the intent of giving her a proper QT, getting her eating, and giving her away to a club member when someone was ready.

I've notice people here tend to get upset at anyone keeping a fish in an undersized tank, and then ignore the poster -- Which I understand! Although it's not the best way to help the fish out.. not helping the person with questions will only make the fishes life more miserable.

Messaged the wrasse guru here awhile back when my 2 wrasse became injured (one didn't make it, and went blind). The response I got was "Oh, your fish are paralyzed because it's in too small of a tank and darted into the glass." After telling him how it got paralyzed, he disagreed, and told me basically "No. Tank too small." After *then* confirming with the company who MAKES the product that this is indeed EXACTLY what happens to some fish, and then re-confirming with several members who've had the same experience, as well as a coral wholesalers whose also come forward with the SAME negative results, from the exact same product... He told me, "That's weird, never heard of it. I still think she got startled and swam into the glass". No further communication was received after that.

I messaged this person looking for help on how to get these two wrasse eating. Specifically the blind wrasse, which did not make it.

Given the circumstances of this little guy, he seems pretty content. He can't swim near a powerhead, or right himself in strong current. His mode of transportation is riding the current in the tank, as he can't swim against it with pectoral fins alone. He stopped burying himself in the sand because his entire tail sticks out, which means he probably lacks feeling in his tail. Because of this he now sleeps with my Firefish in her Bolt-Hole at night.

This entire tank was setup, scaped, and built with this wrasse in mind. The Powerheads and Flow were selected based on his needs, including a lot of 'wasted space' in the back where he can go and relax if he gets tired (he likes to perch on the sand to catch his breath, so to speak). All future stocking will also be determined by this little guy. Which is why i'm here!

For better or worse, this is *his* tank, 100% geared around giving this poor little dude a better life. And while I know he needs a bigger environment, i'm confident that nobody that would have taken him would have given him a better home. (nobody wanted him by the way)

I just wanted to post this as I've seen a few threads that could have easily been answered go unanswered. And I really feel that's inappropriate conduct unbecoming of this community. Whether it be a new keeper who was told by the LFS that this yellow tang would be TOTALLY happy in this Biocube, or a slightly experienced keeper doing something uncommon due to unfortunate circumstance (like me here).

Generally speaking Wrasse's of different species can coexist together given a lot of swimming room and hide outs. The exception of course...... Terminal males in the Fairy Wrasse family. The Melanurus can be semi-aggresive.... I can speak first hand because I have one. The Pink Streaked that you speak of can also be semi-agressive as well. I believe they are in the same family as the Six Line Wrasse....which can be a terror. Unfortunately, your in a pickle as you desire 2 wrasse's with similar attitudes in a 50 cube. I'm gonna put my money on the Melanurus as far as the sole survivor in a fight. I do not think it will be a battle to the death......but it may make for a stressful environment which can lead to
A) the looser stops eating
B) the looser jump out of the tank
C) an Ick outbreak...possibly

When you think that these animals come from the vast ocean.....we ALL are quilty of having fish in tanks. LOL. No worries my friend, I'm an EMT not the Tang Police.

On the other hand if this Melanurus is handicapped/disabled.....he or she may not be able to really do much about a new addition in your tank. LOL, but then on the flip side he or she may be an easy target. The Melanurus buries itself under the sand where as the Pink Streaked builds a mucous cocoon. You'll have to decide:thumbsup: I hope I've been helpful and not one of those people in the "other category"

Thanks, you were! Fish husbandry outside of Freshwater is very new to me.

The wrasse i'm asking about (Pseudocheilinops ataenia), is different from the Six-Line (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia).

From my understanding, the pink streaked is a Pod eater that barely tops out at 2". I'm mostly concerned the pink streak will get picked on. The pink streak is pretty similar to the Possum Wrasse (Wetmorella) demeanor wise. Most people say it's cryptic, shy, and very passive. Very likely the melanurus will have 1" on the new guy.

I've done my homework, but wanted to make sure first as people here mention the Melanurus being a little terror -- while mine routinely cuddles with my firefish o.O

You could use the mirror trick when you introduce the other wrasse. IME, I could not add any wrasses to the tank with my Melanurus. I had to take him out and re-introduce him after introducing the other wrasses.

You might be ok - I generally wouldn't recommend adding another wrasse to a smaller tank with an established melanurus.
