Marc, you should have used the tube siphon method to get your fire fish out! :)

Happy Birthday Young Melev!!! :D

Congrats to you too Marc! :)

That firefish is a quick one, but I was happy to net him at last. When I put him back in the angled tank, I was worried he might become anemone food (two RBTAs, one rock anemone, three mini carpets!!). He seemed okay, but I bet he's very hungry being in the sump so long.

When my son gets up, I'll show him all of your replies. Thanks y'all. :)

His name is Phillip. Or you can call him what I call him. Mini-Melev. ;)

So I got my skimmer reassembled and running. The glue job held.

3 gallons of very watery skimmate so far, which is normal for my tank after dosing Chemi-Clean. I changed out the carbon as well, plus the system got a 65g water change since last night.

Marc,

When you siphon do you use a Maxi-jet with a plastic tube? Do you run the water through a sock back into the sump? I have read all this thread, but don't remember if how you siphon this was mentioned?

Thanks,

Lee

When I siphoned out my sump, I set the bucket on the ground and just start a siphon the old fashioned way (with my mouth), then vacuum up all I can to get the detritus out of the system and into that bucket. My sump is 4" off the floor due to its platform, and the water level is 9" in that section. I have about 3.5g worth of time before I have to stop, dump out the bucket and resume my task. Since this was during a water change, I didn't care about how much water was being disposed of.

If I was doing this with no intention of adding more water, I'd use a pump, some tubing, and a filter sock. The tubing can be put on the inlet and more on the outlet. The inlet tubing is to vacuum up the detritus, and the outlet tubing goes into the filter sock. It is very important to secure the sock AND the tubing so they stay put while you work your way through the compartments. And it may be necessary to stop and unclog the pump if you suck up bits of coral or empty snail shells.

Cool, I figured so. One of the after Thanksgiving sales was a 12 gallon Wet/Dry with a drain on the bottom. I thought this would be perfect for water changes and sucking up detritus. However, when wanting to clean without a water change, I thought the maxi-jet idea would work. I can just see not watching the sock and it falling out of the sump on the floor!!

Thanks, and the bubbles in your skimmer are so white almost looks like detergent in there!!

Cool. Glad the skimmer is up and running again!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MELEV'S SON! Is he a DJ or does he mix alot? You two do anything for his b-day?

How do you get your skimmer to create bubbles that thick????
Do you have any mods that you have done to it? I have an ASM, that I understand is very similar to yours. What can I do to get my bubbles like yours?

I believe the reason his bubbles look like that in the skimmer, he just got done dosing chemi clean and turning his skimmer back on. If I remember correctly, it makes the skimmer go a little nuts for a few days afterwards.

He makes his own music. He plays electric and acoustic guitar, and has several of his songs on his myspace page: www.myspace.com/danielrize

I'm going to be needing that area in about a week or so, so the action figures are going to have to be moved. ;)

We went out to dinner at Pappasitos Cantina, got him a legal alcoholic beverage, and I bought him a 3 month subscription to XBox Live for his Halo 3 playing needs. Now he's out with his buddies drinking beer.

roh-ruh.

This is a combination of two things: The skimmer was just cleaned with muriatic acid yesterday, and the tank was full of chemi-clean and dead cyano bacteria for 3 days (unskimmed). Thus, the skimmer looks like milky foam.

The gate valve is fully open right now, and a total of 4g of watery skimmate was tossed out. I just replaced that with more saltwater.

I'm sure in the next day the water level in the skimmer will drop so that I can dial in the skimmer properly.

It does look impressive, especially since everything is nice and clean again. :)
