I thought I'd put a note out to remind everyone about (or introduce people to) the SEASL mentor program.
This is an exciting program that many of our members have enjoyed. You don't want to miss out!
The mentor program can be found at http://www.seasl.org/mentorProgram.php
How to Find A Mentor
So, how do we find a mentor? SEASL has provided a way for those looking for a Mentor to find them easily. Simply pulling up the "Mentor Program" will give you the complete list of mentors that are available. Simply choose a mentor by clicking on their "INFO" button or on their name. This will bring up the latest information about the mentor that they have provided. If you wish to have this Mentor contact you, simply click the "Send Email" button at the bottom of the window. You may also send additional information by filling in the "text box". It is really that easy!
What a SEASL Mentor Does
Once you find the person to mentor, help them get started on the right foot either through emails or visits to their tank and yours. Assist them in choosing the right equipment, supplements & test kits. Help them to set it up. Show them how to control nitrates, etc. Introduce them to the power of live rock. Instruct them in the art of doing water changes and maintaining calcium levels & alkalinity. Get them involved in SEASL. Introduce them to Reef Central. Let them borrow your books. Help them avoid all the mistakes you made when you were first getting started. Do as much as you can to help them succeed in becoming a conscientious marine reefkeeper.
By Agreeing to become a mentor doesn't necessarily mean that large amounts of time will be required. Sometimes a few wise words from a life of experience can be worth years of trial and error.
How to Become a Mentor
Login to www.seasl.org and navigate to the Access Link, and choose Account Access. Select My Mentor Information, and click Next. Update your information and whether you are currently available to mentor. It's that easy!
The Hidden Benefits of Mentoring
Mentoring garden reef enthusiasts will benefit you, the reefkeepers you help, and the tank inhabitants. Besides the satisfaction you'll feel at being able to help others (both human and aquarian), you'll discover that mentoring future reefkeepers allows you to once again experience the excitement and joy of starting a new tank. Perhaps the most precious reward mentoring brings, however, is the lifelong friendships you'll make. Being a SEASL mentor builds human connections that add to everyone's quality of life. It's a win-win situation for all.
