Yes I did take 2 photos. One of the Scrub Brush I used and one of the butchered Pinwheel after I cut the pins:)

I figured these threads are loaded with good pics, we dont need more of them. I will post what I have later today.

The cable ties on mine look just like everone elses. Very small, but yes they could be interfering. My scrub brush may be a little too thick also. The pump has trouble starting, if I blow into the air line it starts up every time, just needs a kick start.
I might actually breakdown and by the newly designed NW from EuroReef, I'm hearing good things about it.

Also one other note, while I dont have a air flow meter, I do know what my skimmer looks like when it's running. It definitly has more air in it now, and the bubbles are just as fine as before.

if the pump need kick start it's mean that you put wider or to thick , you need to fix it more then that you need to be careful with the bubble size to tiny will increase the pump watt to much , if you have a KILL A WATT you can measure it and adjust it.

there is different type of mesh that i am now wait for sample of it , i believe with this one the pump will run more quite and the result will be the same .

about the new ER impeller i read that it's break and i am not yet about the quality of it , but i am sure in 100% nothing will not compare to the mesh skim result and it's need to take sometime to find the correct modify but when it's done it's work better then any other impeller :)

I'm wondering if 2mm carbon fiber rod mounted on 1/8" thick acrylic disc would work well....there's gotta be a happy median between the performance of the meshwheel and the ease of use of the pinwheel....

The mesh that I'm using is the 3M Heavy Duty Stripping pads. I also tried another heavy duty scrubbing pad that I got from Walwart, it was a little less heavy duty the performance was the same with either of them.

I have an extra Sedra 5000 NW that I plan to do some more testing on to see if I can get more out of it.

I am thinking of do the mod on both SD5000 and 9000. Is there any particular reason the pin on the wheel has to be cut off? I am going to just add the mesh between the pins and hold the mesh down with zip tie. I will give it try this weekend. Worth case if it did not work I will go ahead cut the pins off.

I tried it with the pins on the problem is most of the mesh is very stiff and it would be hard to get it on between the pins. I even tried just leaving a couple on and it was still hard to get the mesh to sit flat on the wheel.

Thanks h20cooled. I guess I'll shave off my pins as well. Anyone know the size of the disc that is used on the SD9000? I could fab one from acrylic instead of cutting the pins off.

I think you will have a hard time getting the disc off of your impeller. I wanted to do the same thing but the disc is completely attached to the impeller.

I just tested my air input again this morning and both Sedra 5000 are still pulling somewhere between 10 & 15 lpm. I then tested both together and it is right about 20lpm. Here are 2 pics one is a single Sedra and the other is the 2 together. Then there are 2 vids of both tests.

Nice skimmer kentrob! Can you give me the measurement to see if I can use the 4100? I am looking for on center between the uniseals for the pump on the skimmer body. TIA.

How are you getting that skimmer to work horizontally? ;)

It is actually the easiest mod out there.....turn your meter upside down to increase airflow.;)

you need to play with it and it will go out.

the stuff you try on the impeller to thick i don't know if you have watt meter but as it's look like your pump maybe run on 90 watt now. i suggest to measure the watt because if you increase to much the watt you lose the point of the mod (i mean you want to get the optimum result)and you can destroy the pump

Yeah it a hard one, the water is always trying to run out...

I know I shouldn't have record that sideways...

Nice view of that skimmer in the movie. So that's what a good skimmer is supposed to look like. All of that foam flowing up the tube like that, how can it not work great.

I called ER today, Sure they will sell me a new needlewheel, they would rather sell me a new pump, genx or the new eheim. He said the pump I have, Sedra 9000, is just not that great.
Kind of makes me wonder why they sold a skimmer for $500 that didnt come with a pump that could do anything, or better yet, why did I buy it? Live and Learn, I just wonder how ER got such a good reputation over the years with those pumps.
Good to see you are using Sedras on that skimmer of yours, I guess with the right configuration they can work.

Back to the drawing board for me.

Which pump are you interested in using a DIY pin wheel with? Just curious because I’ve been wanting to do this too. I have the acrylic (1/4” thick though) and some fiberglass rod which I believe is 3/16” in diameter.

I’ve been playing with AutoCAD 2006 and starting to get the hang of some basic drawing skills. I’ll be putting together a drawing to show accurate needle placement. Just print, punch the marks, drill the holes, cut the pins and glue them in. For the disk, I was thinking of just using either a circle cutter or a hole saw.

How many pins were you thinking of using? The needle wheel for my Sedra 9000 has 70 pins I believe.

I've never owned a Euroreef but I;ve touched plenty of them and in their defense, I'd have to say that the last few years have depicted a period of growing pains. I know they've had issues in the past but the new ER's I've seen are damn near bulletproof and a solid product to say the least. I think the pump slection over the years was part of the process then has lead to what they are doing now....

Wow. I pimped out my rio 1700 impeller tonight. I put 10 layers of gutter guard on it to start and a chuck of a scrub brush and dang. The main tube is filled with tiny bubbles. I also made a new venturi on it with a large size aline tubing and it works alot better. Pictures to follow. btw, I left the org. impeller on and just added on to it.
