Metal around the aquarium & rust...

I was looking at heavy-duty shelves at Lowes the other day, to potentially use for my basement sump. However, I dismissed all the really heavy-duty ones, because the frames were all steel, and I assume those would rust over time, with all the moisture in the air.

My question is this--
Why don't lighting reflectors and pendants rust? What about the metal hinges inside a canopy? Are there certain types of metal that don't rust? I just never thought about it before.

Many reflectors and pendants can rust over time, although the aluminum parts don't corrode as easily. Mostly, they have a lot of anti-corrosion protection.

Stainless steel tends to be more immune to corrosion, and you might be able to find such fittings. I think I did, same with screws, etc, but it's been a while. I did do a special order to get them.

Thanks, bertoni!!

what can take place of metal hose clamps for flex tubing?
-sorry to hijack

No problem; I have the daunting task of plumbing to the sump ahead of me, so I'd like to know that too.

thats what i figured...but i used a couple to set up my new skimmer and they are rusting already inside the assembly in 3 weeks.
