I'm asking around if anyone as tryed this.
1st I have a 125 with 4X96 PC's on my tank I would like to add
Halides, I found some on Home Deopots site (just have to
search metal halide it comes up the $160 ones)
just seeing if anyone used them, I'm sure i would need
a new bulb.

Just seeing if anyone thought of this, tryed it?

Thanks

OK, i tried this a while back, nto the lights, but the same thread......i learned that......Yes, those are metal halide lights, BUT they do not support the kind of bulbs that you would need to keep corals in an aquarium. You need to have the right spectrum of light and apparently, none of those give that off. If you want some pretty cheap lights that will work for you, www.marinedepot.com has some nice MH's for great prices.

Lithonia Lighting
175 Watt 120 Volt Bronze Cast Aluminum Metal Halide Floodlight

It features a multi-tap ballast for 120/208/240/277 volt and a bronze finish on a contoured, low-profile die-cast aluminum housing. It includes a high-performance aluminum reflector, an impact-resistant tempered glass lens

Thats the one..

Yes these will work, if you get a different bulb. This is a magnetic fixture.
If I was looking to spend $160 on MH lights, I would look around on here for a used fixture. These fixtures from HD are not designed to hold up under salty conditions.
I would consider other options, as opposed to buying one of these.
The fixture will be heavier than you will like, and it will be very hard to mount in a way that you will like.
Take into consideration the weight of this fixture, 15 pounds, and also how you will mount it. Mount it in a way to support 15 pounds. Although you could remove the ballast and cap, and relocate it into a box or such. That would make the fixtue ALOT lighter.
Research this before you buy it.
This is just my opinion on this fixture, but regardless of M/O, it will burn the bulbs you would need for corals.
I know it will work, beacause I have almost this same setup lighting my LR tank in the garage. I used an old wall pack fixture and removed the ballast and cap, and get great light from it.

Well, i really cant tell you if you can or not then..... that would be somethign to wait for a pro to answer....i am a newbie myself, but i was told that you cant use them, but maybe that was just becuase of the bulbs, i guess just wait til someone sets us straight : )

Thanks Hex, I liked the fact that they were self contained and my tank has one of of 3/8" x 1' glass I was going to try to mod some holder up from that. Whats a good price for a used MH kit that would do what this does?
Thanks Again

Electricity is what I do for a living, and the difference is the kelvin of the bulb. These are basically the same ballasts you would get from a marine supply company, except these are commercial rated. With saying that, they produce alot more noise than most people want in thier living room.

I will PM you with some info. I do not want to open my own supply house on here. LOL.
