MH 250 or 400s

Im getting really close to being ready to bring my 180 home (haha, 2 yeaqrs late huh?, lol), and am in need of the last few pieces of equipment for it. The biggest thing I need is some lighting. Ive been thinking of just using some old PC lights to get started, but I figured Id put the feelers out for a deal on some used halides. Ideally Id like electronic ballasts, but with money the way it is, Im really just looking for a great deal. If youve got it let me know :D

I have two 400 watt tar ballasts that I will let you have for a song. I think that the starter is bad in one, but it could be the whole ballast. Give me a call if you are interested.

Im interested. Is the starter something I could possibly replace? I dont have your number anymore Dave. Drop mme a PM with it, or give me a call when you get a minute......

Landon- I've also got two spider reflectors with moguls. Are you gonna run two or three metal halides? I have two of those ballasts as well.

Id be interested in the ballast Rick. Ive got 2 moguls, and 2 luminarcs. Eventually Id like to run 3, but Ill be happier starting with two, than I will starting with CF lights :D

Got your message Dave. Will call soon!

Do you think the 150w DE bulbs will be enough for a 24" deep tank? Im not as SPS as crazy as some of you guys have been in the past, and imagine I wont go that direction again. However, I did like having an overkill amount of light on the 75, as I could confidently keep pretty much anything I wanted. I want to be able to have some clams, so if you think this will do that, Im may make an offer.

Also, does it seem wierd to you that it has 8 39w CFs instead of 4 96w ones? I thought 4 96s was the standard.

Which is closer to 350 than 750, lol. I guess I should ask the question instead of assuming. I looked those fixtures up, and the 3 x 150 seemed pretty common. All the ones for sale (new) now also have the lunar lights too, and I was wondering if his had them as well.

Anyway, do you guys thing DE 150s would be enough for 24" depth?

I think that would be perfect for lps but I hate PC's. I personally think they are washed out and don't pop.

^ I agree, VHO actinics are so much better. I think T5 is better than PC from the aspect that they have a lot more bulb choices in the blue range, but I still think Id prefer VHOs. Itll be a long time before I have any corals in my tank, so maybe I should rethink my lighting all together.

At first I wanted to get one of those all in ones like you posted, as I thought it was going to be the only way for me to get any supplemental lighting without going retro. For those of you who dont know (or remember) my tank caused a house fire because of my retrofitted VHOs. It was a freak accident, and probably wont happen again in a million years.......try telling my wife that thoug :D My deal is, I have to get lighting that is plug and play.

Also, Im looking at building shelves on each side of the tank where it is going to be displayed. This will give the illusion of a wall unit holding the tank in place...kind of like an entertainment center, but tank and no TV :D For this tol ook right, im going to have to build a canopy.

Because of this, I was thinking of going with 3 luminarc (allready purchased 2 minis used) reflectors, and either 250 or 400w MHs in the blue spectrum. This would negate the use of supplements, but I think I could be happy with that, as long as I can get blue enough bulbs.

What do you guys think?
Should I:
A) Stick with three halides and no supplements in luminarcs?
B) Look into a fixture like Dave posted to fit into a canopy?
C) None of the above, Ive got a better idea (but you have to share the better idea :D )

Keep in mind, budget is limited, but time is not :D As you guys know, Im in no rush, so I can search out the right deal. Also, Im not opposed to starting my tank with some of the many PC lights Ive got collecting dust in my garage, so this decision shouldnt postpone cycling/starting of the tank.

I vote for all in one with no canopy. I think the 250 with luninarcs is awesome, but I think you are going to have a hard time getting the color you want with no supplement. I always like a 10K with actinics. All blue is just too washed out for me. I personally like the Ushio 10K with supp actinic. Not too yellow but still a little more than just blue. I also agree that there is nothing better than VHO for actinic but with the t-5 craze you just can't find a nice all in one with VHO that doesn't look like it was designed in 1992. How was that for a run-on sentence?

Pretty good run-on :D

"All in one with no canopy" was not an option though, lol. Could you post a pic of your full get up at some time? or is there one in a thread I can search out?

I like the look of the stand alone tanks with hanging lights, but I just dont know how its going to look with the big wooden stand, and two tall wooden shelves on each side.

I did see one time a guy on here build a shelf over his tank, and he hung the fixture from the bottom of the shelf. This may be an option for me, but Id have to get creative with the look of the shelf. I also like this idea for the heat dissapation.

Along those same lines, Id probably try and design the canopy so it wouldnt have a top or back....for the same benefits as the above would offer.......

look at the all in ones aqua traders sells. it the same as coralife fixtures. i have used several of them but i bought mine off ebay. great price for all new equipment.
