MH Ballasts

This may sound like a strange question but I was wondering where most people put their Ice Cap electronic ballasts when you have a canopy. I was looking for a plug and play type set-up for electronic ballast retro's. If I bought Ice Caps ballasts where do I place the ballasts. Or better yet if I run the wiring to my basement do I even need to put the ballasts in a box? And also where can a person buy an empty ballast box? I'm so confuuused. And I know there are people out there that are saying what in the world is this person thinking!lol

they don't create heat, but I mounted mine on top of the light hood. Keeps it away from the water.

they do create heat (not heat to start a fire but when mounting them i would suggest you add a spacer so that air can get to all sides to help cool them)

they can sit out or you can put them in a ballast box (i have seen them mounted on top of hoods on back of hoods, and even under steps)

chadfarmer, you sure your not talking about tar ballasts?

An Ice Cap electronic ballast creating heat? Not either of mine. An Ice Cap electronic ballast already comes with a mounting bracket that is like a radiator fin for heat disbursement. Mine isn't even warm to the touch and it runs 4 - 4 foot 110 watt lights.

Chad's the equipment enthusiast (freak) around here, so I'm sure he knows which ballasts he's talking about.

I have ARO electronics on my tank and, while they are not "hot" to touch, they do get pretty warm. I have mine hanging on the wall in the room behind my tank.

My 175w ARO electronic ballasts are really hard to tell if they are any warmer than room temp. Now my 400w magnetics make some heat no question.

with all the posts he had, I kind of thought he would.

Mine aren't even close to getting warm much less hot. I think the warmth I even feel comes from the radiant heat of the light that makes it through the hood. Maybe I'll check it again tonight?

What's up with all these people from the St. Louis area. I guess we all need a little piece of the ocean a little closer to us?

I was actually just led to that org via reef central yesterday. I will go take a look at the actual organizations site and see what it's all about.

Dave, if you can't make it, maybe we can take a couple tanks out to a park, get a truck load of sand and set up our own beach.......

sterbrock1, you are talking about the ice cap 660 ballast. Farmer is talking about the ice cap metal halide ballast. 2 different products.

A park? If I'm going to go artificial beach, I'd probably have it dumped out in front of a Hooter's restaraunt and set up there.

dphinsx2, yea I kinda figured that, thats was why I listed my light type when I posted he second time.

I'm in Dave, much better idea! What was I thinking?

the icecap 660 ballast comes with a big heatsink for heat dissipation it also can be used on the metal halide ballast
