MH in my 12 NC dx

Where should I get them? I don't wanna lose the canopy so something that i can put in the stock canopy. I'm not sure about the wattage either. What would the best setup be? All info appreciated

BTW, i looked around on nanotuners site and couldn't really find much. If someone could link me directly to what I would need, it'd be great. Thanks

you arent going to be able to keep the top and have metal halides. they get too hot, and one will warm the water way too hot, and two if they are too close to the top of the water they will kill your corals, so your best bet is either a

Actually you can definitely keep the top and put a 70w MH in there without too many worries. The first thing to do though is reverse one of the cooling fans, and you may want to add an additional fan in there somewhere. You will also need to cut out the plastic splash guard and install some glass in there or it will certainly melt, the top plastic will be fine though but it will be hot to the touch when the light is on.

I got mine from Aquabuys http://www.aquabuys.com/miva/mercha..._mh_retrofit&Category_Code=d9&Product_Count=3 and it was a decent setup and works well.

I bought one used from a guy that had modded the stock cover. He put the 70w MH in there and kept the existing 2 24w PCs. He cut out holes in the left and right side of the hood and installed a bank of 3 small cooling fans in each side. One side blows in and one side blows out. He also replaced part of the stock clear plastic light cover below the MH bulb with thicker material which will not melt and also blocks some UV radiation.

Now I don't even want to think about how much work all of this was. But anyhow, my water stays around 80F (and thats with a maxijet 1200 as the main pump) and SPS absolutely flourish under that light. To be honest I am not sure what color temp the MH is, but I replaced the two PCs with actinic bulbs from nanotuners.

I got the latest Odyssea MH. It is 20" 250wt electronic w/2x24wt actinic. It runs pretty cool with the built in fans and hangs pendant. It might be a bit much for a 12. I have it over a 20cube and the corals are doing great. Guess you could hang it higher up. It was $169 shipped.

here is 1 on ebay. that is where I got mine, but they don't appear too often. the rep who visits our LRS ( and hasn't been able to get hold of one) says the demand overwhelms production, especially overseas. though the unit says 24" it is closer to 20". don't know why the units are listed like that.
