MH Shading

I have always had T5 tanks and am new to metal halide. Since switching (and a big tank move) I have noticed an odd thing with my SPS.

The underside of branches that are not growing up towards the light, so branches that essentially have a dark side and a light side, have died on the dark side. With the T5s there was much less shading than with the metal halides. As you can see in my picture below, the corals are otherwise healthy and the necrosis is not spreading to the well let parts of the branches.

Is it common to have the shaded part of my SPS pretty much dead? Will this resolve itself as the coral reorientes itself and starts to grow towards the light?

Here is a picture

That picture is not because of shading. It appears that the tissue is actually growing over the white area.

Areas on acro shaded from light often lose the coralites structures and turns smoother but should not lose tissues.

i have seen this too but not in my tanks ! in fact it was an lfs and i bought a stag that was doing that but since being under t-5's in my tanks it looks fine all around

Thanks for all the comments.

Perhaps the most likely cause was stress during the move from the old tank to this one. Nothing remotely close to this specific SPS.

I do notice on other corals how the shaded areas are smoother and have less corallites. Glad to know that is normal.

Hopefully you are right and the tissue is healing up. I will keep an eye on it.

Thanks,

Adam
