I have an established (8+ yrs) anemone (50+) dominated tank that has 2x 175W MH for lighting. I have been thinking of switching the lights to LED to save some money on my electric bill. Has anyone switched over? Any concerns, tips or advice? Thanks.
Radions are my favorite however I've never ran AI fixtures before and heard great things about them. I ran Kessil 150's one my first reef before anyone even heard of them and had decent success but not with difficult anemones. Matters how long your tank is but maybe look at the new Kessil AP700 units that have a spread of 48" but are $900. To answer your question I think you'll be fine just make sure you acclimate your system to the LED's. They're much stronger than they get credit for so if you run radions make sure you start at 50% and work your way up. Their software is awesome so it's easy to adjust.
IME, I have had serious difficulty with SPS since switching to LED, however, my anemones seem to love it -- I think it has something to do with the shading. For a nem-dominated tank, I wouldn't hesitate to switch to a good LED fixture.
The Gig is still doing well, but I've switched over to T5 + MH in an effort to have better results with SPS corals. It really loved the LEDs and I've been considering adding an LED spotlight for the anemone.
