Mhucasey's SPS obsession

Thanks very much! I agree that it looks better in person, its so hard to capture the layers of the reef structure with the iPhone. The colors are really coming along now and growth is taking off:)

The growth from the last fts is amazing. Your colors are popping too. I'm interested to see what the bulb change does for growth and color.

Looks nice Matt. How do you like the gyres? Contemplating them for the 120.

Thanks! I have nothing but love for the gyres, I have three of them between the two tanks. When you use the pulse flow there is a lot of back and forth turbulence, and a wide, diffuse flow. I love the shape and find it low profile.

The only weak spot is a slow flow spot directly below the gyre if you only have them on one wall. If you have one on each end and alternate them there is no better flow.

Thanks, Ill try to keep putting FTS up regularly.
So far I've seen a hint of faster coloring up, but my two fluorescent Rose Bubble tip anemones shriveled - they may be adjusting to the higher amount of light.
In the mean time I'm feeding them to try to keep them happy:)

Thanks. I was planning all vortecs with 10's across the back and 40's on the side, but the glass is to thick for the 10's. Now I am looking at other options.

I pop the cages off and swap the dirty cages and paddles for the backups once every other month, otherwise it just runs without issue - I would recommend them for sure. They have heavy duty magnets for thicker glass but the standard magnet more than handles 1/2" glass.

I absolutely love my gyres as well.. I have one on each end of the tank blowing at each other. They are on a controller so I get solid alternating gyre flow every minute. I also have a third on the back blowing towards the front. It is on 20 second pulse mode. This gives me alternating cross currents against the other two..
So low profile and powerful. Love'em.

Sweet tank & thread, but I have plenty of reading to do as I just discovered this thread.

I am going to have tons of questions, since I am trying to learn from tanks like yours.

To start off, if you were to get a new skimmer, which one would it be? I am surprised you are doing rare water changes & running a big skimmer?

Welcome and thanks! Please ask as many questions as you like, hopefully I can help.
As far as skimmers go, there is a lot that you need to look at. First is the size of your system and the boiled of that system. I generally look for a skimmer that is "Rated" to handle at least one and a half that sized system.

I like needle wheel skimmers because of their efficiency - remember the skimmer will run 24/7 and an inefficient pump can add up in electrical usage.

I like DC pumps because I can dial in the right speed and they have a slow ramp up start. When an ac pump turns on with a needle wheel impeller it can jam and not spin. The slow ramp up is very nice.

I have been impressed with the quality and service of the reef octopus skimmer I chose, it is very well made and well designed. I don't have too much experience with high end skimmer brands but depending on my budget Id look for a skimmer with the attributes I listed then look for consumer reviews.

In my opinion a skimmer is a must have for coral tanks and it is essential to get an effective one, especially if you use biopellets or other types of carbon dosing.
