i have heard that the Miami Hurricane chalice is selling for close to $500+ per eye. is this true?

not sure, but i wouldnt doubt... my friend has a very small 4 eye one he paid like almost 200 for... i mean small, like 3/4" by 3/4"... absolutely stupid imo... and they take FOREVER to grow

I bought a 12 eye frag completely covering a frag disk from IE CFM (Inland Empire Coral Farmers Market) for $50.

I've seen it for $20 and up an eye normally here in socal.

The My Miami chalice is pricey and may be that expensive. The hurricane is more reasonable:-) Mine are pretty fast growers by the way.

what exactly would a "jason fox" coral be?

Jason Fox corals are corals that Jason Fox originally brought to attention and they are sold with his name attached.

The JF My Miami (that would make sense for OP to be talking about, but not the picture OP posted) runs if you're lucky in the $500 range, and typically in the $700-$1200 range.

unless you are very well off, and even then, that is jus stupid... an insult to our hobby imo... no reason for a silly little frag to sell anywhere near that... but hey, what do i know, i am jus a lower middle class schlub :wavehand:

insert diamond where you said frag-it's all about the same :lmao:

I wouldn't call people having an interest in a specific coral an insult, it's honestly more of a compliment to the internet and reefing communities like this one that share those corals with other people and create the interest.

So your saying that Since some dude went out into the ocean and found this coral... called it something and associated it with his name, it creates interest?

I would have to say your wrong. Where does a 1000$ frag cause interest? Its more of a class symbol in this hobby. I bet 90% of the people that do purchase a frag thats well over 300$ only want to buy it so they can grow it out and turn around and make a buck or two on it. They look at it as a cash cow, thats it. The other 10% actually like the coral and dont wanna but it so they can just chop it up and for the sake of it i hope that they look at this hobby as more of enjoyment than money tree. The whole "I've gotta have something that cost's 700$ so people notice me and my tank and i can brag about it." Is what drive a lot of people away from this hobby.. think im making it up? look in the zoa form...

No, I said since there's a bunch of people who are on the internet, they all collectively looked at this one coral, and that's what created interest. The name has nothing to do with the interest, though by restricting his name to only crazy corals, the name is then associated with things that are exceptionally pretty, and that then allows people to follow his name when looking for really cool looking corals.
Heck, we're sitting here talking about Miami Hurricanes-a named coral that has an interest because people know the name/color of the coral and can all talk about the same coral. Same thing :D

Remember-not everyone posts on the internet. Scroll through the member roster and think of how few posts most have by their name. Those people who just read and browse may have some really nice corals, they just don't feel the same inclination to share. I wouldn't disagree with you that many people get into the collecting and trading/selling aspect, but your numbers are if anything flip-flopped IMO/IME.

And I'd disagree with class symbol. In any hobby there are people who like to trade around and collect choice items. this hobby aint no different. Comic book collectors do it, I did it as a kid with toys and baseball cards. Only difference here is that corals actually devalue as time goes on and they reproduce. So unlike all those other hobbies where a pricey thing (boy I wanted an x-men #1 when I was ten or so) is never going to come within your reach, in this hobby it actually does. My Miami's started near or above 2 grand. They're bellow the 1 grand mark now, in many places by a signicant number.
That there are people who have pocket books to support their desire to have the most slam-bang amazing tank they can have, that's a bad thing? That's the american dream, don't knock it. Capitalism is founded on wanting nice things, and occasionally nicer things. It's not a bad thing just because it's not the "fairest" for "everyone."
What should I check out in the zoa forum? That there's high priced polyps that a certain population is upset about? That's normal and no cause for alarm :beachbum:

I've made this remark elsewhere, but again-if you know of anyone breaking down their tank because they can't buy the really nice stuff, please let me know and ask them when they're getting rid of their house (cause it's not a mansion) or their car (cause it's not a ____ .) If you're a "true hobbyist" then you'll enjoy whatever aspect of this hobby you can. I couldn't afford lights for my 20 for a long time, so I enjoyed the heck out of watching all the different critters my live rock was growing in a tank with no fish or lights.

That the tank now has a few nice chalices in their makes me happy-but I would have enjoyed it either way

+1, it is not an insult. I got sick of collecting the normal things that everyone has, and after a while I started collecting nice acans and chalices.

my hurricane grows like a weed...
7 eyes for $90 -6 months ago
last time i counted there were 22 eyes.
i bought it 'cause i love the color, no fragging in my future...

now this is reasonable in my opinion... but asking hundreds for a however many eyes is jus greed...

the price for a lot of these corals is supply vs demand. It could also be supply vs demand vs ego(bragging rights) lol
