Miami Seaquarium

Down in West Palm Fla visiting the folks. Anyone been to the Miami Seaquarium??? It's like $36 a head. Worth it? Supposedly they have a 750,000 gallon reef....

Any help?

It is worth the ticket price. There was a time I thought public auquariums charge too much for tickets. Think about it this way, you know how much your tank cost to set up and run and you know how much they have going on. So they really need that money. I paid something like 40 pound for London aquarium and pounds are double $ value. And got every pit of my money's worth. Spent hours there. To decrease the amount spent, I did not bring my wife with me.

I got nuthin' for ya on the Miami Seaquarium, Mark.

To make it worth your while maybe you should leave the wife and kid behind but bring your camera to take plenty of pictures to share with us :)

Never been there. Its been ten years or so since I was in florida. The one in Tampa was terrible when I went.

I was there about three years ago and thought the Tampa Bay aquarium was great. Don't know what it was like ten years ago perhaps they have improved many of their displays. Lots of stuff to see there now.

Good to know its better when you went.Wifes folks live on lake mary,in sanford gives me something else to checkout

Nope, never been there.

But I have to disagree on not taking the wife in with you. If you take her along you can always remind her threw your trip that it could always be worse back home. :)

here's a wife's point of view (although i have to use something like a political rally to obtain this perspective since i am the wife and reefer)....

if she enjoys sharing the hobby with you? take her. it's nice to be able to share in that wonder. if she doesn't? how annoyed will you be if she keeps saying, "okay, you've been staring at the same 14 inches of water for 10 minutes now..."

just my two cents.

This is the EXACT reason why I prefer to go to the "fish store" (as I call it) by myself or with my 2 year old son. He loves it, where she says, "Come on!! Are you almost ready to go yet?"

I feel like I'm in a race when I go in with her....OK, ready? set...GO!!!! Ooooh acros, big tank! So pretty, snails on top of one another...haha! Oooh dead fish, not good. Black tang!!! Sweet!!! Annnnnd.....DONE!

exactly. :hammer:

So A) no one has been there recently??? and B) this has degenerated into a Mars and Venus type thing.

Instead of help, you guys alienate me from my wife and child on vacation. I'm gonna need more Coronas.

The bottom line is, if my wife says we're going, we're going. She's the one pushing for it. I've seen my share of crappy public aquariums, I just didn't wanna drive 2 hrs each way and over pay for something that's less than spectacular. Especially on vacation. I'm all about chillin out this week. Not looking to add extra stress of driving thru a major city.

Now, if there were a few LFS, I might check them out. I went on the Florida club's page and got a few suggestions. Might check them out if they're close enough. My daughter is 4 months, not like she'll notice anything other than the pretty lights.....

Mark, never been there so can't comment on that . I will say that the ticket price is about the same for the Georgia Aquarium. If your wife wants to go then do the family thing. It shouldn't be a mars/venus thing it should be a family thing.....JMO

I would suggest checking out Wide Wold of Corals. They have an excellent selection of corals. The guys there are great . They are in Orlando though......

We work the opposite way here. Reefkeeping is my hobby, but when I took the family to Boston last year, I worked while they went to the Boston aquarium without me. :(

As for the Miami aquarium - though I've never been there, I say go. How many opportunities are you going to have to go there? To me the risk is too high that I'd miss something spectacular...

Oooo...just noticed 2 hour drive each way. That seems excessive to me. I don't remember where exactly in Ef El Ay you are at the moment, but there are so many things to do I would think you could find something closer where you wouldn't need to spend 4 hours in the car.

I'd definately listen to feedback from those in FL. I posted in the Tampa Bay section as I'll be down there end of April on vaca and besides suggestions on the aquarium and local LFS, I also got quite a few suggestions for great local food and other things to do.

Hope you & the family have fun and get to relax while you're at it. :)

Miami and Orlando are very far apart. Ok, Mark. Just did some online travel agent work for you. The reviews on the aquarium aren't all that good. Out of the 83 comments I just read, only 3 of them were good reviews. The good reviews were about the friendliness of the staff and landscaping of the grounds. The bad were all about the animals, the unhealthy environments that the dolphins were in and the lack of care of the inhabitants. Here is one of the quotes:

"Don't bother with Seaquarium. It's a waste of money and time! Horrible place, I'd say. My family, including young children and an elderly couple, agree. We enjoyed visiting the beach much more. And... in fact, we saw wild dolphins at the beach! They looked better than the caged ones at the SeaQuarium! "

you need to decide on your own...sometimes a negative review will get me to go just to prove it wrong...but then i kick myself later.

found one more quote:

"Other than that the coral reef tank had salt water leaks coming from the viewing windows that formed algae on the glass where you looked in so you could hardly see anything on the inside. It was really scary when we were walking out of that building and you get wet because of a big leak squirting on you from the top of the tank by the exit. I actually thought it was a sprinkler to cool us off before we went outside, until I asked another employee about it and he said it was a leak."

Miami has TONS of other options for family adventure...

I realize they are fairly far apart but alot of people on family vacations to florida visit orlando for the parks. I drove 3+ hours while I was in Florida in January just to go to wwc and trust me when i say its worth it!
