Micro? new Taxon???

OK... everyone knows about my Micro fascination... In my time collecting various morphs I feel I have educated myself at least to the point of not knowing anything about the morph I am about to post... LOL

Recently, in a micro Trade I received a very nice but equally interesting morph. The morph is called Rommulen Warbird and I know no more than this about its origins.

This micro seems to fall out of the commonly accepted rhealm of Acan identifiers. Most of the micros that we collect in this hobby for the greater part are in the Taxon Amakusensis and of the Genus Acanthastrea... Basically, they appear as miniature Lords... Fluffy, meaty bodies with a central mouth on a flattened, rigid skeletal structure... When irratated the "Meat" or "Body" of the Micro pulls back and into the skeletal portion actually pulling the mouth open and protecting the meaty or body portion of the creature inside the skeletal structure. I am not attempting to educate you but mearly to preface the following morph.

It appears that this morph instead of pulling back into itself draws itself up almost like a "coinpurse" then as it relaxes it loosens the strings and opens to eat.

Has this micro been identified?
Is this actually even a micro?

It looks liek Micro amak to me, but I'm no pro. When did they change the genus to Ancanthatrea again? Originally, Micromussa amak was classified as Acan lordhowesis, but was given its own genus (hence Micromussa), as I understand it anyway. It could be one of the other Micros (diminuta, etc.).

Yes, I originally thought it may one of the the others Dim, Min, Amak ect... but was unable to classify it properly :( The Acanthastrea Genus IDs came directly from a CITES ID and Taxonomy site..

http://sea.unep-wcmc.org/isdb/CITES...anthastrea&Species=amakusensis&source=animals

The difference is that all of my Amakusensis morphs pull back into thier skeletal structure upon irratation... this one does not? It pulls closed at the top utilizing a totally separate means of protection and muscle grouping.

hey Doc,
I have had the same thing happen to some of my larger polyp lords. For some reason I believe that when the meaty tissue has grown to large, the skeleton can not handle the excess tissue, so that is why we get that"coinshape". Nothing scientific, but just a guess.

It looks like an overfed amak to me. They get really large like that when they have been forcefed quite a bit. Fragfarmer has a micro that has quarter sized polyps that do the same thing. When he got it it was standard size but it got "fat" (for lack of a better word) from feedings.

what makes it "overfeed" Jen? Mine get like that, and I do no target feeding of any sort. Just a squirt into the tank :D No force feeding of any kind, just what they can capture themselves.

Overfeeding is a fine line-when the corals start to lose their natural appearance and begin to get fat I'd say they've been overfed (they are naturally very tight to the skeleton).

If you feed meaty foods daily this can happen, they also sometimes exhibit the stretching behaviour when there is not enough light.

There are some micros that are just plain larger than others as well. For exampe the joker XL was naturally fluffy and had much larger polyps than any of the other morphs. Once I stopped feeding the tanks it did de-fluff a bit but it still has some of the largest/meatiest polyps in my tank.

I have also heard of this type of stretching during interceptor treatments so I'm not sure if that ties into the meds or the oxygen change in the water during treatment.

I'd be interested to hear the feeding routines for the og owner of the warbird, it may be very heavy (trying to push growth).

It's a cool piece either way =)

Thanks Jen and everyone :) I have had it about 2 weeks and I feed it 2-3 times weekly with cyclopeeze.... As a note the polyps are actually quite small, definitly not one of my larger morphs. The original owner is Captain Picard, he bought it as an entire colony... hopefully soon he will chime in with a feeding schedule. It still seems to close up in an unusual fashion by comparison to my other morphs... It just behaves differently. It is very cool Thank You

So I'm confused. No one mentioned anything about the taxonomy. I thought Micros had been pulled out of the Acan genus... The link posted was dated 1990. Was that perhaps before Veron changed the taxonomy? If you go to the whelks website, it is listed as Micromussa...

I have a few micro's from capt picard, and all exibit the same qualitys you describe. I know he feeds 2 times a week to boost growth.
I feed once a week in the tank, and i still get that same growth from them. (Large polyp)
Hey capt when am i going to get a frag of the rommulan?
You showed me a pic a few mos ago.;)

Well, I have many micros that I "ForceFeed" LOL they are fat little buggers but they still utilize the same muscle groupings during irratation and feeding. This one is just Different. My trade with Picard was perfect :) I love this morph even more because it is so unusual. I also believed that the Micro had its own class but as I was reserching for this post I utilized the the CITES info. If you have an updated CITES link I would love to properly classify this.

Wassup Peeps :)

Some info on feeding:

All micros and acans in my possession got/get target fed once a week using coral frenzy or cyclopeeze. At the begining they were in my main display on the bottom under phoenix 14k 250w hqi, then moved to a frag tank with 150w 14k hqi and 110w pc's 10k/actinic with little flow where they liked it much better. I measured the happiness by the color they were exhibiting and the fluffy natural state they show'd.

Water Parameters (both tanks exactly the same tested with salifert kits)

Salinity 1.025
Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0
Ammonia - 0
PO4 - 0
Temperature - 78 - 79 Stable
Mag - 1310
Calcium - 430
Alk - 9.6

Currently to date i have 15 different morph's of Micro's and Non Indo Acan's and all have super bright colors and have showed tremendous growth.

Creetin - Pm me :)
