Microalgae, and Copepods.

I have given this much thought and I have read a bunch about this subject. So I figured I would go ahead and ask you guys a few questions to get your input.

I have read that Nannochloropsis sp. has a hard shell and copepods can't digest them, but they keep the water column clean of detris. Is this correct?

I was reading a study that Rhodomonas sp. are not very nutritional, but I also read they are high in HUFA and good to feed the copepods 24 hours before you feed them to your fish. Do you think this info is true?

I heard of also feeding a mixture of Cheatoceros sp. and Isochrysis sp. What I was reading is that doing this had I higher mortality rate and more spawning, in the Tisbe sp.

1.What kinds of Microalgae do you feed your Copepods?
2.What species of each, or does it matter?
3.What kinds of Copepods do you grow?
4.Do you think Copepods are better to feed fish larvae, than rotifers?

Nano is used in conjunction with other micros to get a full profile in hufas. There are several books and websites to read thru. The fun part is growing all of these different cultures while not losing sight of the end goal. Yes I think that Copepoda are better than rotifers, yet they still have a place in the feeding regimen. The more you read u will understand that you will have to go thru many trials to have success. Magazine to read is CORAL (get the back issues for at least 3 yrs.). Books to get plankton culture manual, clownfish breeding book. Matt Wittenrich breeding book, how to raise and train peppermint shrimp. Websites to read is MOFIB and another one which I will lookup (Eric and Matt contribute to it). Search for Karen Randall on her success with genicanthus. Lookup U. Of Hawaii at their tropical aquaculture site. Lookup TAL ( Matt Wittenrich andEric Cassiano at a Florida university). Search for all info on reef culture technologies Frank Baensch and his success with marine angels. Look for aquaculture articles from universities across the US. Go to ASLO.org and do a search or read thru many back issues. Read thru articles from UTMSI . Look at the AIMS website in Australia.

Thank you Louis Z, although not exactly what I was wanting. I it is helping me learn some of the ins and outs.

hey Zgetman. unfortunately you have to piecemeal the info and you will learn alot along the way. I have alot more to share

There is an article on brine shrimp direct about culturing Copepoda. It's not very scientific but it addresses the question of feeding. The author shares the methods that have worked best for her and the site sells algae paste.

I did it for a while with nanno and T iso. An had the best success with T iso. The pods ate it quicker and it seemed like I had to harvest more often. The most important thing is keep it sterile. I could not an my phyto cultures kept crashing so I stopped plus I live near AlgaGen and my LFS sells bulk pods and phyto I hope this helps. Happy Reefing.
