MiddletonMark's 58 [photo-heavy]

Joseph -
Seems like Ca has tested out around 400 [375-425] recently - with Alk around 8-9 dKh. Both are a small margin above what I'd want as minimum ... and yet low enough to where slight overdosing is unlikely to cause a problem.

Recently [growth phase] that's meant about 40-50 ml of Randy's DIY 2-part [forget whether recipe 1 or 2] every morning, and 40 ml of B-ionic every night.
Have been thinking about a reactor, but given I've got 46# more Dowflake in the basement ... might be a while. Fairly likely to add a 2-channel doser in the next few months so that I do little more than fill the ATO bucket and look most days.
The present pattern works well, as I check the tank those times already ... but if I can have the same results + be lazier, I'm all for it :D

If it's been over 2.5 weeks since a w/c [and likely to be at least a week more] I've added about 20 ml of Magnesium [b-ionic] and a minimal dose of lugols ... when I remember [50% of the time].
Probably dose those only once every few months ... normally I'm good on the bi-weekly w/c's and thus don't dose anything but Ca/Alk.

Mark,

>except for the LPS, most of my frags have come from MARS/WRS members. I started with a few SPS from Greg Hiller [BRS, mailorder] and Gooch's Corals as well.<

I thought I recognized a few things in your photos. :D Bummer about the Montipora eating nudis. I recently had a brush with them in a frag tank, but I got lucky and spotted them early. Still don't know where the heck they came from. Not hard to eliminate them from isolated frags. They never maid it into my main system. Good thing as they would have run wild. Here's a shot of my 110 gallon before I moved the colonies over to my 400 gallon system a few months ago. :D

Beautiful Job  I like the grow out from frag concept too. IMO It's really the best way to go for us smaller tank folks, as well as being more rewarding like you said. I wish I could find a nice colorful Midas like yours, everytime I see it I want one... Did I say great tank? :)

Thanks for the nice compliments.
Sure makes my day having so many people I respect say such nice things :D

Yeah, you would hardly see them on the undersides of caps/etc. I know I first wondered what was going on when I saw a pair of snails moving across the underside of my big Monti cap.

As snails don't eat over living coral ... it tipped me off to pull it out and see. Not a good way to find a pest.

I really like your choice of fish. They're appropriate for your tank size and not the usual fish seen in most tanks.

Thanks Agu!
Seems like my fish [even shy ones like the Sunburst] are out in front all the time - which I link to the lack of aggression, major territorial/growth issues.

Seems like I can feed smaller fish every day with less nutrient issues than more/larger fish. Since feeding is so much fun - I'm glad I get to so much :)

After experimenting with all ranges of feeding ... in the last 6 months I've been very happy with exporting like a madman ... and feeding well. Mostly fish-mush, never huge portions ... but daily most of the time - sometimes a couple times a day.
Tank sure doesn't seem to be hurt by it ...

Looks great Mark;) Makes me want to downsize my system, lol. Your tank is beautiful, and I know it had to be very satisfying watching the frags you got from other local reefers grow into nice colonies.

Amazing tank. Looking at the two pics that are 2 years apart, the tanks come along great. Can't imagine how good its gonna look in another 2 years ;).

The tank is looking great Mark:D
I also am a huge fan of starting with frags(all my sps came from frags) and growing them out. Cheaper and better results overall IMO....if you can be patient. Also a much more predictable outcome colorwise etc...Your tank is a testament to the results that can be had.
Nice new trade additions. Gotta love frag credit:)

It's 36" wide, 18" front-back, 21" tall [Oceanic 58 RR]

One very nice thing about that tank is that it has no center brace [and isn't scary because of that].
