Hi all,

Just recieved this message from a friend about a potential computer virus threat:

"THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, DO NOT IGNORE. READ IMMEDIATELY I checked snopes.com and this is for real.. Warning READ AS SOON AS POSSIBLE Get this sent around to your contacts ASAP...we don't need this spreading around..... PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS: You should be alert during the next days: Do not open any message with an attached filed called "Invitation" regardless of who sent it, It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it. If you receive an email called "invitation", though sent by a friend,do not open it and shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept. SEND THIS E-MAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW, COPY THIS E-MAIL AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS AND REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US"

Maybe some of you computer nerds (:)) can shed some light on this to confirm it's legitimacy. HTH.

Thanks,
Garen

As Jeni said.

Also you shoulg configure your email client to NOT open attachments without your permission. I have never opened a virus because I choose my options rather then letting Microsoft choose them for me. It is the first thing I do when I purchase a new confuser.

Most attachments I delete regardless of who sent them. I have a policy that if someone truly feels something is important for me to review they will make it easy for me and cut and paste it into the body of their email.

I advise all my friends to include a specific codeword in the address line. If you don't have it, you get deleted unread.

I love my Mac, too.

But also, I would bet that any such email that has the statement 'send to as many friends as possible' in it with some kind of threat warning is a hoax.

Please NEVER EVER forward emails that tell you to forward to as many people as pssoble. Waste of everybody's time.

I just typed Invitation into the Search. Olympic Torch probably woulda worked too. I use it all the time, before fowarding questionable emails, like those about lost children, etc.
