Mike's 300 Double-D

Just wondering how the equipment room/sumps/equipment pictures are coming?
(i like that portion of tanks more then others)

also, how do you like the new Closed Loop positioning and operation. any changes you wish you could have/would have done?

thanks!

Mike and Terry, your tank is beyond amazing...I've been tankless for the last few years, but have been contemplating a new mixed reef. I read your entire thread and I have to have a 300dd for my in wall build. As others have said, you are an inspiration to us all.

That is a mighty fine thing to say! We love the hobby and our animals, and if it helps get other folks to get excited about reef keeping, that's a bonus. Thanks for the compliment and let us know how we can help you with your build.

David, the closed loops are working great. Here's what the layout looks like:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/terryl93/5677484247/" title="nt 1039 by terryl93, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5028/5677484247_7fecdd419b_z.jpg" width="640" height="425" alt="nt 1039"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/terryl93/6290153045/" title="tank layout by terryl93, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6239/6290153045_004bbff9c8_z.jpg" width="640" height="388" alt="tank layout"></a>

The back CL outlets (green arrows) are full 1" tee with two 1" 45 degree elbows that are aimed at the back of the rock structures.

The front CL outlets (green arrows) are 3/4" outlets with loc line fittings. They are also tee'd off with opposing 3/4" flare nozzles. The aim is to get flow bouncing off the side glass and upwards.

We are also using Tunze 6055s (blue arrows) mounted up near the top of the tank to create some high level targeted flow onto the corals.

There is also a big 'ol Tunze 6100 (red arrow) sitting in a Tunze Rock on the bottom aiming slightly upward toward the middle of the tank.

All of this is doing a really nice job at creating some targeted as well as random flow. The corals seem to be enjoying it, and the desjardini is a freak - he cruises from outlet to outlet swimming against the "tide"

I'll record a sump room video tomorrow and post it so you guys can see how it all looks now. Thanks for keeping tabs on our thread!

I love the thread (ups and downs..... sadly)

I am planning on installing a closed loop, and love the info and truthful information you give.
thank both of you!

Thanks David.
This took a bit longer than we wanted, but we were pretty busy this weekend. Anyway, here's a video of the sump room:

And here is the drawing of the system layout which may help to better understand what you're seeing in the video:

Wow, i didnt realise that you had a little room for everything (and i thought you got rid of 1 skimmer for the other, and didnt know you were running both!)

I like how everything is setup, and how nice and clean the sump is!

(sorry... i like equipment more then fancy fish pictures..... and that is nice!)

As amazing as the pictures are, they don't even do this tank justice. This is the nicest tank that I have ever seen in person. The two island and the fish and the corals and lighting is all superb! And if you think the fish tank is impressive, the garage/sump room is every bit as impressive as the display tank. Great people with a great tank. Everything is so clean and neat.

David, Thank you! And yes, we are running both skimmers, LOL. Terry purchased the largest SRO in sump skimmer that would fit in the old 125g sump as the Deltec AP851 just could not keep up with our bio-load on it's own. The SRO is rated for 450g and the AP851 for 400g "normal bio-loads". As we have a number of good sized fish and we feed multiple times a day, our bio-load is heavy. Rather than purchase another larger skimmer after the sump room redesign, we elected to just run both skimmers.

Your sump room is soooooo clean. I didn't know you were running two skimmers either.

Thanks LN! It has been much easier to keep the room "clean" since we replaced the old 125g sump and moved the 75g prop tank/refugium outside the door as it really opened up the space in there and the height of the new sumps make it much easier to do maintenance.

Oh, how I wish I had the room for that. Love it, great job.

Thanks so much digitalchrisg!

Awwe thanks! We're both sitting here blushing, but really appreciate the kind words. Hahah we forgot about the nametag... :lol2:

Man that is crazy setup! Hole lots going on!
One thing that you may want to look into is this from avast for your Deltec skimmer bucket, just incase it goes crazy!

I plan to get the regular Med acrylic tube for my XP 3000E skimmer.

Hahah, yes, I guess it is a bit crazy... and thanks for the link to the Avast Davy Jones skimmate locker. :D

Has I have said before you all run a first class operation. Every thing has a purpose and fits into the over all system flawlessly, thanks a lot for sharing.

i love kuiters leopards. hardly see them. I get them from AU from time to time, always had good luck with them too! expensive though. lol

beautiful set up.

Very nice! Great pics. Just when I thought my photography was getting ok, you have to post pics like that. Ugh ;)

:o LN you are too kind! We just love following your setup, it's like our twin tank down in sunny Florida.

great pics i truly love the fish

Appreciate the kind words, CMM. Glad you took the time to stop by our thread.

Gorgeous! Any worry about it and your other leopard wrasses?

Hi Alex, thanks for the compliment. We picked her up from some good friends across town who are downsizing for a bit. They were very kind enough to think of us and knew that we were "wrasse nuts". The fish has been in captivity for a couple of years, and is a model citizen. She was great in the QT, and has taken her spot in the display very quickly. She bosses the "little ladies" (two young female blue star wrasses) around a bit, but the big male blue star won't put up with anybody messing with his harem for long :D

Thanks Kevin! The other beauties in our QT we got from you are almost ready for release. We'll be posting them pretty soon... :bounce3:

Congrats on the beautiful kuiteri!!!

Thank you Kenny!! We are pretty lucky to have scored her - especially in such great shape and used to captive life. We know you can't wait to release your new Jocs into your display! What a thrill that will be...maybe one day... :inlove:

How do you QT your wrasse that bury in the sand? Is there sand in your QT? I had a bad experience with a female blue star in QT and won't try again until I hear from some who has done it successfully. Great thread by the way.

Akrite, thanks for the kind words and for participating in our thread.

It can be done if you provide a Rubbermaid bowl of sand for the wrasse to sleep in and a couple of pieces of live rock. It also helps tremendously if they are already eating prepared foods (which all of ours were doing). :)
