Thanks guys. We were flattered to be approached by their editor for a tank spotlight. Getting such a prominent spot in their print version was a real treat!
The Frag tank is a new addition. We had been looking for a shallow tank for quite some time that would be better suited to frag grow-out and easier maintenance. After our club took a trip to Pacific East Aquaculture, we started looking for a shallow fiberglass tank such as the ones they have in their facilities, but they are hard to find and quite expensive. Then we found AquaBox and talked to them about a custom build. The tank turned out great. Fantastic construction quality to our specifications, and none of the typical run-around we hear about with custom construction. They were very professional, fast, and the quality is great. This tank has some very nice features! Here's a shot:

The corals show a significant difference in coloration, growth rates, and behavior in the frag tank vs. display tank. The no-name Chinese LEDs aren't bad, but they certainly cause the corals to exhibit different pigmentation. There is a difference in both how the corals "color up" as well as how they look. Once we move frags to the display, they immediately look different under the metal halide lights, and then will start a gradual pigment shift. These changes vary by coral; there's no apparent "standard effect", as in all corals look more _______ (green/blue/red, etc.) in the frag tank.
The growth rates are different as well. We typically see improved growth rates once frags are moved to the display. Polyp tentacle extension is also very different in the frag tank - we usually see much more extension in the frag tank than in the display. What causes these differences is just speculation - lighting, flow, predation (no "plucky" angelfish in the frag tank!), etc. One thing that is not a factor is water quality or condition, since the frag tank is plumbed into the main system.

Eddie, the rods came from McMaster-Carr -they are the solid, smooth finish rods. Completely inert, and they come in handy for all kinds of projects, not just for the reef.
Happy Holidays everyone! Things have been busy around here with the seasonal rushing around, and trying to get things wrapped up at work, etc. Terry has been taking lots of new pictures, we have some new livestock that's been in QT for a few months and about ready to release, and we are also playing around with some new equipment, so some good updates are coming soon.
