Milwaukee Digital Refractometer

Oh great, another gadget that I'm going to HAVE to get now.

What kind of reviews have these had as far as accuracy?

I got one used. I like it. Seems to work really well, and definitely easy to use. You literally put a couple of drops on the glass and press the button!

My take on this.

Pros:
ATC - will automatically compensate for ambient temp
Calibration: will auto calibrate with r/o water
super easy to use
easy to read display
consistently reads the same as my handheld refractometer

Cons:
Resolution: it only reads 3 decimals for S.G. ie: 1.025 and has a accuracy of +/- 0.002. Also it only reads whole numbers for ppt/psu (ie:34ppt/34psu) and lists accuracy of +/- 2 for psu/ppt

That being said, I would definitely recommend this product. I also have a squinty-eyed refractometer and found the digital product to be just as accurate. IMO this is a luxury item though; a $30 regular refractometer is just as good.

Dr T. quick question. Do you have to calibrate this often?

i calibrate it with r/o every time I use it, per instructions. Lately, i've been monitoring my salinity so it's been used more frequently. Usually I only use it once a week or so.

i bought a $24 refractometer from BRS on Black Friday. Later saw they had the digital for $79. I would have bought it.

Reason i didnt kick myself was that i read the instructions and it does require calibration everytime you use it. Im not going to complain about it other than its more work than a regular refractometer.

I actually ound on Amazon today with free shipping for $85. If anyone is still interested in picking one up.
