The second one is not a mimic octopus, it is the more delicate Wunderpus photogenicus.

too bad neither of those is a mimic octopus. They both are wunderpus. They come from the same area(lembeh straits) but they are significantly different in looks. The mimic doesnt have the clear cut stripes that the wunderpus has. It has more mismatched and mottled stripes.

I work at a public aquarium and we have a wunderpus on display. After this one passes we will be replacing him with a bimac because of the strain collectors are putting on their already small population.

Its a shame to see this animal on EBAY. They need to go on a protected list. NOW.

Are the Wunderpus just entirely too delicate to be kept in home aquaria? If so then it's a shame they're collected at all.

Don't get it. I am a big fan of octopuses and I currently have a O' Vulgaris in one of my aquariums at home. A couple of years back, I was offered a mimic octopus for sale by my LFS. I told the LFS that I will think about it (due to the $ tag). I went home and found out that they do not last long in a home aquarium and the only person that was successful at keeping one alive only kept it alive for 6 months. I told my LFS that I was not interested. However, I have done plenty of research on this matter and found out that it might be possible to keep one alive if you are able to replicate it's home habitat which consist of providing the mimic octopus with at least 10 inch of sand bed in the display tank, due to the fact that those octopus burrows themselves in the sand. On the other hand, having 10 inch of Sand in the home aquaria is somewhat not possible because if the octopus stirs the sand, it will release all the bad things from the sand into the water.
