mimic octopus

this sounds like a good idea and all but I don't think the florida aquarium accepts animal donations from hobbiests. I think it is stated on there website. if it is something they are after I am sure they would bend the rules so if I was seriously thinking about doing this I would contact the florida aquarium and ask first. if they are interested post here and I might would even kick in a few bucks. just wouldn't want you to waste the time effort and money for nothing.

Yes I was thinking about this as well. I will give them a call we might be able to find another home as well. There are many public Aquariums with in and 8 hour drive from us.

i just googled images of the Mimic. Amazing stuff. Check out the pic of the Octopus being held in somones hand mimicing the guys hand. unbelievable

my thoughts .
i am not sure if it was purchased to get it out of the store would be good then the store would just see that someone is willing to buy it and just get anether since it sold but if it doesent sell they wont get anymore in . but still sad to see a creature like that in a small box
ok im going home now.. sorry just wanted to post something

Just Got Back From Pet Mark, Talk to Nick he said he would be willing to pay for half of the 180$ needed. Pretty cool. I left a meassage with person in charge of collections at Florida Aquarium and should get a call back Monday. Its not a yes but the person I did talk to said its not a No either.

This is something that should be strongly considered. Are you helping one animal, or hurting many more? I prefer not to buy animals that I feel should not be sold. Of course this is a moral thing with me, and I won't tell you what to do.

You do want to be absolutely certain that you have someplace to take the animal to if you do decide to go through with buying it. Octopi (?) are excellent escape artists, and the average hobbyist would not be able to keep one in their tank.

I agree I do not have a place that is why I contacted the Florida aquarium. As far as hurting more animals I think that the entire hobby should take a long look at the way animals are imported and treated. Why should any wild animal be kept in a small tank, because no matter what size tank you have, its nothing compared to the size of the oceans reefs that many off these fish roam.

There is a huge debate there, probably a can of worms better opened in it's own thread.
FWIW, I was not looking to rain on your parade here, just making sure you have all the bases covered.

Blue-ringed Octopii should not even be brought into the trade at all in my opinion ( and the opinion of pretty much every professional). Simply too much that could go wrong.

angelsil,

I am glad someone said something about the Blue Ring. I am always shocked when a LFS brings one of these in to sell. I have actually seen a few of these in home aquariums over the last 10 years and due to there size, it amazes me that a LFS would ever sell one due to liability reasons. I hope they have some serious legal documents that they make a customer sign before they sell one of these guys. I also hope that someone at this LFS has thurough knowledge as to the care and handling of this animal so it ends up going to the right home.

Just got back and it is still there with a sold sign on it. They have lots of cool stuff there. Not sure why so many rag on that store. I think it is great and have had great luck with everything I buy there.
