Thinking about a Lemonpeel angel Mimic Tang when I get my larger setup in the future. Better half and I are trying to decide what all to keep in a 120 or 180 :) Any particular quirks about this fish?

Nope no quirks. The mimic tang aka chocolate tang aka lemonpeel mimic tang aka acanthurus pyroferus is my favorite fish hands down. I'm so glad that you want one! It is just an awesome awesome fish. I'd say the 180 idea is much better for it than the 120, but I love the fact that I'm not alone in loving this fish. :love2:

^_^

Yeah, so once I upgrade, the problem is FINDING one locally. The only LFS that carries them in the area I'm moving to couldn't earn my business.

My LFS's don't carry them, but I ordered one and they got it in a few weeks. If you don't have a LFS you want to support, why not buy online? If you are concerned about your fish being sent to you in a little baggie, how do you think they get to the LFS? If it's not obvious, in little baggies.

I love mine. Very beautiful fish. Absolutely loves garlic infused Nori!

Its not how they arrive, its his the LFS treats them. The tanks are awful, filled with the most discusting looking algae I've ever seen, and the poor tangs and all bones.

Algae doesn't bother tangs. They eat it. It bothers us because it looks bad, but I doubt the fish care. As for the fish being all bones, the LFS is NOT in the business of keeping fish long term. If they are all bones, they got them that way most likely. Fish stores want to move their inventory in a few days, or they are not successful fish stores.

Now that I think about it, the chocolate tang was the first saltwater fish I ever purchased. Well, my wife purchased it...lol. We had JUST gotten into saltwater tanks after keeping a nice 125 african cichlid tank for a few years and when we went to the lfs (this was years ago) we couldn't believe the prices. I thought paying $10 for a cichlid was insane...these marine fishes were waaaaay more than that. Well my wife liked the juvi mimic tang and we were talking about it and when the kid came over to help us she was just like 'bag him up'. I looked at the tank and it was marked $60. I almost fell over...but she really wanted it. I also wanna throw in there that this was for a 90 gallon tank. Only after much research, mistakes, and wasted money have I now realized that it wasn't such a hot idea in a 90. Nor was adding the purple tang. Or the yellow tang. Get the idea? ;) So when I advise against doing all the things I just mentioned, it's not because I'm trying to pick a fight, or trying to start trouble...it's because I've been there and done that. I've wasted $$ and killed a few fish along the way. All because 'friends' and 'other people' and most importantly 'THE LFS' said it was ok. They also told me keeping stonies in a 220 gallon 30" tall tank with pc lighting was ok...with no more flow than the returns produced. So...take what your lfs tells you with a grain of salt and do your research on your own. Not only does the lfs employees not always know the right answer, sometimes they steer you in a direction you might not have went. Not because they like you, but because they like money and they like selling things. Like the horseshoe crabs they sent me home with. Oh and yes, that was plural. But it's ok, they sold me the MINI ones that don't get as big as the ones you see the shells of on the beaches in Massachuesettes. :hmm5: ROFL Or the boatload of sandsifting stars that I 'needed for my sandbed'. Or the lopezi tang that grows to no more than 3-4" and is perfect for my friends bio cube. hahaha Or the bamboo shark egg that would be fine in my 125 after I take it home and hatch it myself...it will eat right away! :eek1:
