Mimic tang with Blue tang?

Hi folks,

I have a established 80 gallon tank with external over flows. I haven't added fish for over 6 months and I currently have 1 small blue tang, 1 PJ Cardinal, 3 gobies, 1 firefish, and various snails and shrimp.

I'd like to add either a mimic tang or kole tang if I can find one the same size as my blue tang. She is only small right now. I bought her when she was the size of a quater and I am aware she will have to come out when she gets bigger.

Any advice on having a mimic tang/blue tang or kole tang/blue tang combo in my tank?

Alot of folks (me too) feel that you should only add fish that are appropriate for your current tank. I would rehome the hippo now and go with the kole tang... beautiful and perfect for your tank size.

It would work out IMO. I think the mimic/blue tang combo would look the best. You might have aggression when they get bigger but give them away or upgrade when that happens.

My mimic has been a bit of a bully of late.

My flasher wrasse is scared to death of him and constantly is running from him, my caudovittatus angel stays in the upper half of the tank, even my blue reef chromis are getting seriously harrassed. The mimic's face turns dark brown/black and he lunges at a 1-2 inch fish.

He doesn't do any outward physical damage, but the fish know to stay out of his way.

I have to agree completely.

Keeping a fish that gets well over a foot in an 80 gallon tank.....

So, people with 250 gallon tanks can only have 1 sohal tang and no other tangs. Don't mean to sound rude or anything but I've never seen a tank that size with only 1 tang before.

Well I sure would not pick a sohal tang and any other tang in a 250. The other tang would not make it long term.

Large tangs grow to be a spectacular reef fish; they are hardy, eat well in captivity, doesn’t bother sessile invertebrates, and rarely quarrels with other reef fish. Sounds like the perfect addition to your reef aquarium, right? The problem iswhen it grows to an adult length of one foot!

Some aquarists such as ones on this thread say they plan to keep a particular fish until it outgrows their home aquarium and then donate it to a public aquarium, another aquarist or their LFS. While this sounds reasonable, it shouldn’t be assumed that the local public aquarium, LFS, or fellow hobbyist will accept your donation. Most public aquariums are inundated with donations of fish and simply don’t have the room or need for many fish. And of course, the health of your environment, no matter how good, is an unknown to public aquaria. LFS will only take fish they can sell. Large fish require large tanks and few folks really have LARGE tanks; some do most do not.

I’ve often seen the statement, “I’ll get a bigger aquarium when it grows.” While this is honorable, it rarely materializes. My estimate of upgrades that NEVER happen is about 90%. The fish frequently suffers and dies long before a new and appropriate habitat is obtained.

Then there is the attitude that you’re not going to keep the fish alive long enough for it to outgrow your aquarium anyway. While this is rarely said aloud, we all know it’s out there and came up implicitly in this thread. Aquarists with this mentality should find another hobby.

The other side of the argument is illustrated by these statements: “So what if we purchase a fish that will outgrow its cage.” “After all, we’re not obliged to recreate a natural habitat for a fish to live out its natural lifespan.” “It’s already been taken from its “home” and placed in a glass box, so what difference does it make how long it lives?” “Let’s not kid ourselves; we’re not coming close to creating a natural reef in our homes anyway.” “Assuming it’s not an endangered species, there’s no harm done.” “After all, we capture many species of fish to eat and no one complains about that.” There is some validity to these arguments. After all, what is the point of our home aquariums? Guilty pleasures, a home decoration, an educational instrument. In any case, the goal is rarely to see how close we can come to keeping a fish alive for its natural lifespan.

Hepatus tangs are a widespread species and occur throughout the Indo-Pacific Ocean, but are not present in the Atlantic Ocean. Because of their size and swimming habits we recommend a 10 foot tank minimum. Tank length is most important not gallons.

Considering that a sohal is one of (( if not the )) meanest tangs available, yes only one sohal would work in a 250.

As posted in post #1, I am well aware she will have to come out later in her life. I agree that a 1 foot fish in a 80 would not be good.

I tend to like to keep fish that can live out their lives in the tank that I currently have.

Toddrtex,

Seeing as you have a 75gal, can I ask that you share your stocking list with me to help me with my 80? I originally wanted to add a kole OR mimic tang and 2 clowns to what I already have, but this new tang rule has me second guessing that. It's just a little bit of a shock to hear after looking back at every tank I have ever seen and realizing that not one follows this rule.

My original thought was that the blue tang would need to come out in about 1 more year of growing and only due to that.

I tell you that a lot of people on this board are hippocits when it comes tank stock!! I don't know one reefer out there that stocks there tank properly! If you fish are happy and well fed that's what counts! Most stores that I have been in don't stock there display tanks properly! Nobody will ever telle what I can and can't put in my DT! There is nothing wrong with putting a 2" mimic tang in with a tonnie Size hippo tang! Give me a break! Let's see you guys post a picture of you tanks with your list of live stock and let's see who the hippocrits are!

Some people do the right thing and stock appropriately. Maybe you should think about your sour attitude.

Did I say everybody! The guy was just asking a question about 2 tangs! It's not going to hurt the fish to go into an 80g tank because they are so small. I don't have a sour attitude it people have a tendency to jump down someone throat for asking a question! You have to agree that there are a lot of hippocrits on every forum! You are one person that is lucky to beable to afford a 600g tank! How much rovings in it?? If it's half full of rock then you have a 300g tank not 600g if you were to do all thenmath right I bet you have to many tangs in your tank as well!

Maybe you should switch to decaf or go have another beer... you need to chill out brother. The tank holds 500g of water... I checked when I filled it.

I not mad at all. Just stating the truth. What is your water volume and you rock and sand displacement? After you take that into the equation I would put money down that your tank is over stalked as well. Am I wrong and if so prove me wrong. I not o e to back down from a debate. This is a fun for me.

Actually, I strongly suggest you back down from this type of posting as we discourage ad hominem type posts. Please review the user agreement. if you want to continue to use this board. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Wow. A threat! I'm doing nothing wrong. You've been called out and you don't like it! If you want to give advise to someone then beable to state that you are doing things right! Anyways I'm done with this! At least I can back up my post and give advice I follow! practice what you preach is all I have to say! I haven't posted anything distasteful on this thread. Just called you out and you don't like it!

You are wrong and its a good thing that you didnt put money down because you would have lost it. You didnt even read my posts or you would see that I listed every fish in my tank and how much water is in the tank. This isnt about my tank or your tank, its about keeping a fish that needs alot of room to swim and grow in a tank that is too small.

I just had a thought... did you sneak onto your daddys computer looking for some problems.
