hi,

could you please advise me, I have 175gallons net volume system. Medium stocked, mainly Sps and some Lps, running full KZ zeovit system, ULNS stable.

I currently have an atb 840 with airstar dc pump (upto 1200lph air and 2400lph water). Cant get consistent skimmate from it, its always wet or if i set the pump level lower i get nothing.

Fancy a bubbleking but cant decide.

a)mini or cone (either will fit)
b)180 or 200

any thoughts please?

I was running a ATB Elegance 200 and switched to a double cone 200 on a 170 gallon SPS dominated reef. There is no comparison, I liked the ATB but I absolutely love my Double Cone with the DC pump. I get better skim more control and it is quieter. The only thing I would improve, is I wish there was a quick disconnect on the pump for cleaning purposes, I have to take pump apart next to display to clean, but it's not that big of deal, just a little room to improve, otherwise it would be perfect!

Since I own neither, I'm forced to pass along second-hand recommendations. I took a quick vote, and 4 out of 5 agreed that you'd be better off with a double cone. You're using the KZ system, so the sizing is more debatable...

You could consider your system more fully loaded, since you have a massive bacterial colony that continuously processes waste into nitrogen, and go for the 200. By the same logic, you could reason that too efficient of a skimmer would be stripping away the expensive additives your system is dependent upon... and by that rationale, stick with the 180.

Please remember that it's not the quantity of the skimmate that you should worry about, it's the consistent removal of a fixed amount of nutrient to maintain the lowest possible level of free organics in your water. Since you're adding organic components that you're paying good money for, you'll need to balance the benefits you receive from dosing with the benefits you receive from skimming.
