Miniature Clownfish

Hey guys,

Has anyone else got a "mini clownfish" like its a few years old and still 3cmish sized? I'm wondering how long they've lived and how common they are.
A breeder may know are they very common I dont see them often her in NZ.
We have a three year old black and white occ and hes 2.5 cm long all the kids who come into the shop love him.
I have just come across a picasso mini that I am going to put into my 6L nano.

Thanks :)

I have had a few runts from my clutches, most are culled (which imo should be) but did keep 1 cause the wife liked it but he stays small.

My 10 yr gold strip maroon that I raised never got more than 1.5 - 2 inches long. I lost him earlier this year when the heater failed.

That's interesting the idea of runt who's had the exact same living quarters and access to food as the others. Because we all know that improper sized tanks can cripple or stunt growth.... If there are any biology students here that could make a good study subject.

That's so weird the female of the pair I used to have was an impressive 7 1/2" and her male about 4". Meanest fish I ever owned [emoji48]

Sorry to hear, sounds like it was a male, as Gold stripe maroon clowns are very sexually dimorphic. Or it was a runt, which like the post above, should be culled.

Yes I am aware of the size differences, he was from the third or fourth batch that I raised; his mother was a large fish while daddy was small, as is the norm. There was no way to know he would be a runt, he was a random pick from his siblings and was no smaller than any of the others. And I agree, he could have been just a small male. Any attempts to pair him with another fish failed, so he lived his live with snails, crabs, an urchin, and various shrimp instead. You can read more about him and see a video here: http://reefkeeping.com/joomla/index.php/current-issue/article/160-tank-of-the-month

Beautiful tanks Randy, I really like the sun corals staying open all day and your approach to feeding. IT WORKS!

Somewhere deep in the RC archives there are pictures of a small ocellaris I had in my tanks. Never seemed to make the transition to adult, male or female. Specimen was tolerated by other pairs most of the time, although not welcomed.

More than once I added juveniles much smaller which quickly grew past him in a spurt and paired off beyond his participation.

I got it in a used tank purchase/tear down and he lived well into the years of double digits without showing much "aging." A concept I appreciate much more as I have aged significantly :D
