Minimalistic multichip DIY LED build

+++++++++++++++++++++ yep

Hey marspeed what tank are you putting yours over that you need the lens? I'm running all of mine without lenses (even over a 24" deep 120g) and am not having any trouble getting par to the sandbed. I thought about trying the lenses but if I put that in my makers heatsync configuration I only get adjustment from 120 degrees to about 90-95 degrees before it hits the splash guard. I'm only running them at ~75% of max right now and so I still have room to drive them harder if needed without adding the lens. Krazie :jester:

I am using the lens to contain the lite the tank is a shallow rimless and in my living room , also the fixtures are about 14 inches off the water surface

Yes that is the same lens that was offered with the Lumia 5.1. They are both on the same size MPCB so no reason to make a new one just for Lumia 5.2. Krazie :jester:

I have seen that this LED is addressed to specific market, but spectrum of this led seems to be very interesting for zooxanteles too. I oly affraid about amount of red light, can be too much. I have ordered 3 pcs of this leds for my refugium and will test how many wats RB leds should be added to one 30W such specific light source.

I see. Just didn't think it would be too effective with so many LEDs that far from the central axis. But I'm too lazy to do a ray tracing diagram on a particular lens right now :D

They have proven to be pretty good for what they are and the fact that they are adjustable (which always means a little less of a lens and more of a diffuser). The only area that I have heard complaints about with them are on the edges with some banding. This usually isn't a problem because another fixture or LED is over lapping that area to reduce the effect or the edge is outside the bottom substrate and is blended after reflecting off of the side glass of the aquarium. I know the fixed angle lens preform better but it's nice to have the adjust ability and the slight blending of this lens. Krazie :jester:

Are there any narrower optics available for this multichip LED?

I'd like to move the fixtures really high up so that there's almost nothing over the tank, as well as reduce the light on the side glass (well, plastic :) )

The most narrow I've seen for the multichip is 60 degrees. Early on they had some 45 degree one but I don't think many people used them. Not sure you are going to have much luck but AC-RC on fleabay is probably still your best bet. Krazie :jester:

Look for reflector types, say for the large bridgelux vero chips or luxeon K-24 and such, on Ledil's website (http://www.ledil.com/) most can be purchased on digikey or somewhere else if you search on octoparts, you should be able to find something that can acomodate the lumia 5.2 or similar in a narrower beam.

Thanks guys! I already have a ton of discrete LED's, so will probably just stay with that route, more options.

I think that's why I wrote off the Multichip way back when, but sometimes things change.

I just think it's an elegant look to have the light way up high in the canopy - but I've since found out some of my fish are jumpers :( so will need to have a lid anyway.

Then again, the last one jumped out last year so ... decisions decisions.
