Miracle Mud / Fiji Mud Questions

Hello,

I finally have water in my system. I'd like to add the mud I have. I've got two big jars of miracle mud and two small jars of fiji mud.

The fuge is approx. 15 gallons... roughly 12W x 20L x 10T. What's the recommended depth?

Do I need to rinse it?

Turn off all the pumps when I add it in?

How often do you need to change the mud? Once a year?

Any tips or other recommendations?

Thank you!

100% honest.....I tried the miracle mud in my last tank......didnt do a durn thing for it. im not sure about the fiji mud. But im personally not a big fan of it, it didnt do anything the sand wasnt doing. I think I paid 40 bucks for a jar of it....man they saw me coming! haha.

Anyone?

The Mud is high in calcium, trace elements, etc. that you won't find in your sandbed from what I understand. I already have the mud, just looking for pointers on setting it up in the fuge.

I'm not sure about the miracle mud, but the Fiji mud helped drop my nitrates. I put a 1" fine sand bed underneath a 1" mud bed. Pods and bristleworms enjoy it too.

Oh...and you don't need to wash it. Let it settle for about a half hour before turning the pump back on.

What was the thought process behind putting a 1" layer of sand under the mud?

Thanks a lot for your input.

tagging along, i'm also setting up a fuge in my established tank. I was wondering about maybe a cycle using miracle mud or fiji mud. Any thoughts?

not meaning to hijack.......

DO NOT WASH IT!!!!!! You need all the "stuff" that's in it. I say stuff because their is a ton of good stuff in it like nutrients, small live critters and some not so small. I found a cool black nudibranch about 1in in length. I didn't know what it was until a fellow member ID it for me.

I have about a 1/2in-3/4in base in my 20 long.

I ended up going with Miracle Mud, just because it was on sale at the time. I've heard good things about both brands. Been useing MM for almost 2 years and like it.

They sell a "recharge" jar of it as well. It is pretty much the same thing but highly concentrated. You could probably get away with buying a small jar of that stuff and mixing it in with some live sand, but I haven't heard of anybody doing it this way. Would be cheaper though.

When setting up my tank I was also concerned with it causing a cycle. The guy at the LFS said it shouldn't, so I went with it. After a day or so I started getting readings of phosphates (sp?) and nitrates when I never had them before. I can't blame those readings on the MM because at the time I was was going from a 55g to a 120g so I was adding newly mixed water and live rock (cured but you really never know for sure). All that bio-load so fast, most likely was the cause. But I never really had a cycle, probably because of the new water. I would suggest keeping a close eye on your parameters. If they start to get out of your comfort zone, start doing waters changes until you notice things start to mellow.

All in all I recommend the MM. The only down side is it is very silty(sp), super fine. If you happen to stir it up, like accidentally drop a piece of rubble, instead of sitting it down softly, it can get into you display, making it a little cloudy. Still good stuff.

Nothing new to report. But my tank has been doing great thus far. I have chaeto, caulerpa, and a couple of mangroves in their now along with some purple sponges, cocoa worms, and some other stuff. It's been over a year now and I think I'll let it go another year to be honest and then change it out.

I haven't noticed a major change in depth of it over the year.

Just be careful when your messing around in the fuge to not to disturb it has it will cloud the water really easily. Like when your adding a rock or something like that.

Does anybody have any new tips on Miracle Mud ?????

Well, my tip is to not bother, and to especially not think there is any miracle. :(

If you want iron, just add some. It is cheap and easy. Other potential benefits are probably speculation.

I noticed when i was in the lfs the other day that the ingredients listed on the back of the miracle mud included copper
