missing conch

My fighting conch has been missing x3-4 weeks. He can't just disappear as he has a large shell. He had been lumbering around for 1-2 months prior to that, and has never disappeared this long. Is it possible he is still alive somewhere in the sandbed?(I have a DSB). If not, should I bother looking for the body(I'd have to dig a lot probably)?

I don't find them to last very long. Just don't think hey get enough to eat. At some point they burrow into the sand and never reemerge. You can go searching for the shell I suppose, but the soft parts get eaten pretty quickly.

I wouldn't disturb the sand bed looking for the shell. If dead, any meat that was in the shell is long gone having been consumed by sand bed fauna pretty quickly. The shell wont cause any problems if it is buried in the sand bed but extensively digging as you suggested you would have to do may.

I had one that disappeared for months only to show up one day. Depending on the size of tank and amount of sand you have I would not worry.

I know this thread is old, but sharing my missing Conch experience. Mine has been sight unseen for about two weeks until last night. His eyes and mouth were out of the sand and he was feeding. He is submerged again now, but at least I know he's still alive lol!

It was comical (and a relief) to see just his eyes and mouth poking up.
