Mitratus Butterfly Fish Reef Safe?

lol kens got a good deal ehh ?

they are not easy to keep :) not easy to get feeding, and the track record is not good.

but as small as they are [I just got back from SUM] you might have abetter chance of getting it eating and keeping it long terms :)

if you pick it up, dont forget pics for us :D

I haven't kept this exact species personally, but this is the opposite of my experience, and readings, about Roaops butterflies in general.

My pair were absolute pigs upon entry and were about the same size. My fav roaops actually. I gave them up with my burgessi and declivis when I combined tanks however...

That's too bad I remember your pics. Why did you give them up?

Mitrarus are hit or miss. Usually they will not damage anything, but like all butterfly they will eventually crave meaty things and find your coral quite attractive.

then I guess we have different experiences and have read different sources about butterfly fish.

they are not easy to keep from my experience and from RC threads. many agree with me on this.

Are we talking about the same fish? Chaetodon mitratus? The group of butterflies this fish belongs to are well known to be some of the hardiest butterflies around. Even old school Fenner gives them high marks :D They are just expensive...

ok I can agree that within the butterfly family they are one of the hardiest :)

you are right. :), luckily, up here they dont cost as much :D

Oh you were talking about butterflies in general? My bad, I misunderstood. :)

Beautiful pair. Any ideas how old they are? I thought adult mitratus had no white on them as adults.

Not sure how old they were when I got them but they weren't much smaller so they were not juvies.

Here is a shot of them in my Q-Tank two years ago...

Thanks for the info. Once again, beautiful pair! I may need to consider adding one to my collection :)

LOL, I saw that :) But no, I only meant one individual. I thought it'd be a nice mix with the declivis and tink/burgessi hybrid...
