mixed reef with sps?

I had a 3x2 90 gallon, I traded it for this current tank... A series of unfortunate events, and blunders on my part killed most of the SPS...It ended up w/just LPS & Anenomes, and a few new "brown" trial SPS at the very end before I switched over to the new setup..

this is when it was sps dominate..

..man I wish I still had those corals....hence the hesitation to re-stock sps to quickly in my current my setup.

(funny in the second pic, what looks like a bubble coral skeleton.. is now alomst 1' long when fully expanded....to bad the sps couldn't pull threw like the bubble did.

I think that, sure you can mix, but, if you are thinking long term, not a good idea.

Given room and good conditions, corals can get very big. One thing that I find disappointing is, there are not enough tanks that people plan out beyond 1.5 years. Everything crowds together, and the corals don't get a chance to get any size to them. They then spend all their energy fighting each other and not growing.

How big does an acro typically have to be before it can spawn in the wild? Anyone know?

If you want to do a mixed tank, pick corals that are easy to trim back, (think montipora) and give them room.

I still can't figure out how to keep the zoos, shrooms, starpolps, ect at bay. Stay away from those, or, keep them isolated, and small. Thats my advice.

I had calcium issues.. City added calcium to the water, calc went up to over 1000ppm.

The tank was made by Visio

Dots, you must have the designer "Holier than Thou Reef " based on your total of four years experience. Do you really feel this way? ...... "but I would hate to see that large population of people in competition with me for the most colorful, best stuff only to have it dead in a few weeks".......You make too many assumptions about the "average" reef......"the dark dingy ignored one with hair algae and SRTN all over"...... You know what they say about assuming. It makes an a** out of you. Also if you are paying $100.00 for the half inch piece of "Green Snot Nose Booger" than you don't have the right friends. People forgot how this hobby was started, but thats another thread, thank God I run with the right circle. Happy Reefing Dude.

Thanks for the input, always a pleasure to engage in stimulating conversation with my fellow enthusiats in an attempt to push the hobby forward......By the way, those are polarizing examples to illustrate my theory that I believe that there are seperate tank doctorines emerging as the hobby is evolving and gaining more insight. I was thinking that possibly the "one type fits all" method of reefkeeping may not be the most productive mode and possibly counterproductive and on the decline............but we didn't get that far. See biotopes.....

Oh yeah, that reminds me......I found this today online:

"Trolls can be existing members of a community that rarely post and often contribute no useful information to the thread, but instead make argumentative posts in an attempt to discredit another person, more often than not based on what they thought was said rather than what was actually said by the other person, concentrating almost exclusively on facts irrelevant to the point of the conversation, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others."

I think what Dots was trying to say was that while mixed reef tanks can obviously work (look at the many mixed reef TOTM's for proof), that these type of set-ups will likely not provide the most advantageous growing conditions for either LPS, SPS, or softies.

For example, an SPS only tank would more than likely have faster growth rates than a mixed...
