Mixing Lyretail and Resplendent Anthias

So maybe the third time will be the charm with trying to get some healthy Anthias! I have 1 healthy Resplendent ready to come out of QT; her 3 other compatriots didn't make it.

RC members have suggested to get Lyretails because they are a little more hardy compared to others. Has anyone mixed Lyretails with Resplendents? They would be QT'd in a 40B, but ultimately will be in a 420.

Thanks again for the help!

Reason I ask is that one article that I found suggested that the Resplendents may be too shy to be with the Lyretails. Any experience with this combination out there?

Resplendent are shy, no doubt about it. No lyretails in my tank, but the other fish do freak them out. They hang around and in a plating monti so I have to make sure they get enough to eat.

Since I have only 1 that made it through QT, I assume it would be better to get more for her so at least there will be a group?

I would think that would be the right approach, yes. I've had some issues maintaining a group in my display though. Had no trouble getting them through QT (13 for 13), but then lost a few to the carpet, at least one to the Vortech and presumably another to lack of food (it was the smallest and skinniest). My 'revised' approach.. moving forward, will be to acquire slightly larger specimens - 2" or so - as the really small ones seem to not compete well in the display.

Thanks Simon -- the females on LA are small, and the ones that I got initially were little. Maybe I need to keep them in QT longer to fatten them up, assuming they make it. Or ask for the largest "small" they have?

That makes a lot of sense actually. I bought mine in two batches. The first batch (1 male and 6 females) were all 2" and have all survived except the surfing male. The second batch, 6 small females, haven't competed as well and I only have two left. I think it'd take the better part of 6 months to get them to size though. I have an in-stock alert setup for medium females on LA.

Hmm ... that is interesting. A fine line between getting them big enough to survive and getting them small enough that they aren't turning male

I have Randalls, which are similar to Resplendents and have the same shyness.

I had a similar issue........lost 2 of 3 in QT. I bought 3 more Randall's and two Ignitis.

Things have gone very well. I made a of point of only buying 2+ inches on all species. My main focus was for competition in the display as well as being large enough to not get through my 1/4" screen over the tank.
