Mixing of Sands

Just purchased a 55 gallon tank from a buddy:D who already had live sand in the bottom of the tank (about 2 inches of it), wanting to know is it ok to mix new live sand with the old sand in the tank:confused: or should I remove all the old sand and replace with all new live sand to my aquarium ??? Not sure how old the live sand was in the tank but when I moved the aquarium We left some water in the tank for the sand to stay wet, but after putting the tank in it's final resting spot I ended up having this foul odor with what water was in tank:eek: , after I added new water to the tank the odor went away and the water cleared up rather quickly and is now clear. All my tests results on the water are good and their is now 3 peppermint shrimp, 5 snails, 5 blue leg hermit crabs, & 3 Damsels in the tank right now, and wanting to add some more live sand to make a deeper sand bed and withing 2 weeks some live rock but not sure about the mixing of the sand ??? Greatly Appreciate The Addvice From Everyone

I used old live sand. its a good way to start your cycle in any case. Im still in cycle time now, but everything looks fine. I mainly used old LS, and mixed a lil new stuff with it lol.
