Hello,

I just have a quick question about mixing percula and ocellaris species. I know that mixing clowns is not ideal, but can it happen? I have a 75g tank now with a pair of occelaris, established for two years. Due to rearranging and breakdowns of some other tanks, I have a "spare" female percula (I assume it is a female because it was the only clown in a tank for about two years). Right now she is in the fuge, but I need to move her out of there because I also have a dawrf lion in the sump who should be moved to the fuge. What can I expect if I add the female percula to the 75 with my established pair of occelaris?

I know the best answer here is to sell or give her to a local, but we are attached to her. At the same time, I can not justify setting up a new separate tank just for this clown (or the lion).

You're risking her life and the pair if you put her in the 75G. I'm not saying it WON'T work, but there's that chance...and a pretty decent one at that.

What you said confuses me a little. Not meaning to be rude at all, but if you are really attached to her, you would either set up a nano for her or give her to someone else to take care of rather than playing roullette with her life. Again, I don't mean this offensively, because you are here to ask questions which is great. But sometimes being attached to an animal and really caring for it means letting it go to someone who can better care for it. I know, it suck, but you do always have the option of setting up a 10-20G for her...I wouldn't recommend putting it in the same tank as the established pair, but if you are dead-set on it, watch them very carefully...I pretty much mean do not let them out of your sight for at least a week to see their attitudes toward each other.
 
I'm hardly playing roulette with her life. If it will not work, I will work something else out. I just thought I would ask because I have seen clowns mixed in other tanks despite the rule of "one clown species per tank".
 
Percula and Ocellaris clowns usually always pair up and show no aggression towards each other. The only thing I would worry about is putting it in a tank with an existing pair. They might not like having another clownfish around.
 
I've got a pair of Ocellaris, a pair of Percula and a pair of Clarkii clown in a 44 gallon hex tank at present with 10 other fish (holding tank at present).

These pairs of clowns were together in a 110 before the 44 and will be going into a 265 shortly.

I've mixed Percs and Ocellaris pairs many times for others I've helped out and never have I seen an issue.

You may not see an issue initially, but there's a pretty good chance that at some point their territories are going to overlap and there will be some serious bickering, probably resulting in the death of one or more fish.

Carlo, even a 265 is too small for 3 pairs of clowns (especially with Clarkii's in the mix), IMHO. I wish you and your clowns the best of luck, though...hopefully things will work out.
 
I had an established pair of percs and tried to add Ocellaris and the Percs kept getting more and more agressive until it got to the point I had to remove them or they would be killed. It might work. It might not. I'd try.
 
The two females will be problem. If youadd a female Percula to two young Ocellaris, there should not be a problem, but two females will be problem, Occ+Occ, Occ+Perc, or Perc+Perc.
 
The problem is not having three clown fish (Ocellaris and Percula) in a tank. I have three in my 20 g tank. The problem is having 2 females in a 75 g tank.
 
i have actually been able to pair up a marron clown and a ocellaris.. but then again that isnt 3 you could always just try it and if it doesnt work out you can remove it. but i think anything is possible

Am I correct in my understanding that this concern would lessen with a larger tank? Would a 6 Ft long tank "usually" give 2 Perc/Ocellaris Females enough territory to leave each other alone? (I say usually because I realize there are exceptions to every rule of thumb)
I have a tank with a 5 foot footprint, this is something I have been toying with...
 
I had a 400 g tank and had two clown pairs in it. They are on opposite side of the tank. IMO, a 75 g tank is a little small for two females.
