mixing water !!!

Hi guys,

Me again, just a quick question.
When first set up a new tank (30 gallons), can I put the RODI water directly in the tanks and after put the a salt on it ? Or should I pre-mix the water before add it into the tank...

Cheers,

Agreed, should be fine to put RODI straight in the tank and mix it that way. Grab a Cooper's, sit back and let your pumps do the mixing.

i would at the very least disolve the salt in a pitcher of water a bit at a time and dump it in slowly..
If not some salt will end up settling . Of Course if no rock or sand its not really a issue..

I would make it a habit of making your water in a separate container, always slowly adding the appropriate amount salt mix to the water. I wouldn't make a "consentrated" solution, i.e. adding enough water to get it to liquify, as this will cause a lot of abiotic precipitation of the Ca and Alk, leaving it unabailable for your animals.

I would not advise this!

Why not? If he is going to cycle the tank normally what harm will it be that the rock is in there while he is mixing the water? Sure it could creat dead spots the salt will settle but with good circulation he could do it without any ill effects in my opinion.

Am I missing something I just don't understand

I would not advise mixing in a tank !! I would pre mix in a bucket before you add to your tank !!! go to the local home depot or Lowes and go get a small pond pump for about $ 20.00 and then pump your mix into your tank ! that way you can dial in your salt level...
