MJ mod users in sps tanks

For anyone that has a MJ mod 1200.
1. How many do you have in your tank?
2. And how do you like them?
3. Do they have alot of flow?
4. Also please post the size of your tank.

Thanks

I'm thinking on getting the kit to do 2. But before I invested wanted to hear from the ones using them on their sps tanks.

I am running 2x1200 MJ Mods and they give off a good amount of flow, about 2000gph each. I still have mixed thoughts about the mod though because at times it will make loud noises and at times it will be silent. So far one is silent, but the other still makes noise sometimes.

BTW, this is on a 75g tank.

Yup, noise is likely the shaft. I had one where the prop just nicked the stopper as it rotated, making a little noise. I just had to make the stopper a little shorter and it fixed that.

znut: I have 2xModdedMJ1200 plus 2xSeio 1100 in my 90g sps tank, giving me about 6500+gph of flow (including my return).

I like them, except for the way they start (hitting the stopper & making noise). I actually had one stopper break off, so I had to pull the pump from the tank & put in a new stopper. Without the stopper, I have to restart several times before it goes in the right direction. With the stopper, no problem but just a little noise. I would like to use them with a wavemaker, but I'm fearful the start/stops will break either the stopper or prop over time.

Definitely generates a lot of flow! For the price, you can't beat it. I'd definitely do it again, unless I decide I can afford the tunze nanos when they come out ;)

I just put mine together last nite from mjmods.com, I love them and plan on moding the 2 remaining ones that i have....put out Tons of flow, they picked up debri off the bottom i didnt know was there, just be ready to put a little work into putting them together correctly.

I have a 125 tall (only 5 ft long) and currently run two modded MJ1200s and one regular MJ1200 in addition to my sump return flow. I initially had all 3 MJs modded but reverted the one back to normal because I ended up with a sandstorm in my tank. All my sps are currently happy, growing and colorful with the two mods and one regular.

Hi dreaminmel: hey, just wondering if you've seen the other MJ mod where you can turn it into a random flow pump? In a nutshell, you basically cut off the entire nozzle portion (where the venturi connects to) all the way down to the impeller cover. Then hook the MJ up to a wave timer or similar, and then each time the pump starts, it may reverse directions & send flow a different direction. One time it turns on & may rotate clockwise, another time it turns on & may rotate counter-clockwise. Without the nozzle, the flow isn't directed as it leaves the impeller.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but only because I already modded my 2 MJs to high flow. But I'm thinking of giving it a try. Since you have a 3rd normal MJ, I thought I'd mention it. You have 2 extra impeller covers, so if you didn't like it you could always switch back.

Anyways, another MJ mod, so I thought I'd throw it out there since it fits the theme of this thread.

Keep the replies coming. Sounds like it maybe worth a try to see how much flow these MJ mods put out. I have a 10ft tank and using 4 Tunze streams. I thought I'd add these to the back corners to get rid of any dead spots the streams miss. I'll post how they do on this thread when we get them done and up and running.

I have 2 Modded MJ1200s and 2 Seio 1100s in my 150 and the flow is awesome! MJ Mods are great! I got my stuff from http://www.mjmods.com, just make sure you take the o-ring off and bend out the little clips on the MJ a little bit before trying to put the shroud on. I bought the DELUXE MJ KIT for 1 MJ 1200 and bought a second shroud, centering cap, and prop separate. I think I saved like 7 bucks doing that. Anyway the stuff from mjmods.com is great and easy to put together. I would definitely do it again! :D

Also watching the video on this site helped…

Rob, I hadn't heard of that one yet. At some point I will be investigating wave timer options so I'm glad you brought it up. I may give that a go if I get one. Thanks! =)

I unfortunatly did this to about 3 of my maxi 1200s, and it was a big mistake, it dosent just make random flow it will almost make the flow go 180 so its just hitting behind the pump on the glass.

I didnt realize it was doing this for a week or so, so the pumps that I turned off would be spraying water doing nothing for a day or so before I realized what was happening.

My opintion is just do the mod, they are amazing plus do you want 2000gph or 295. For $35 or so you can have more than equivilent to 2 6060 streams and save $230.

I got 2xMJ1200 prop mod, SEIO 1100(POJ), a 850 GPH pump on detritus duty in back of the rock and about 850GPH after SCWD and head loss on the return in my 150G 6'.

Its good flow but I will need more as the coral grows in. I would like to add 2 more MJ1200 prop mods and pull the SEIO. It sieze up once month and at 1100GPH it flows a third of what my propmods do. Anyway I am a SPS BB flow freak so the more the merrier. The guy I just bought frags from today has 5xmj1200 propmods plus his return in his 120G BB but it is grown in.

Anyway for you guys the are running the MJmod.com mod kits if you open up the housing you can get another 1000GPH out of a MJ1200. I used plastic gutter guard.

The mod isn't perfect but it brought SPS quatily flow to alot of people that were never going to pony $800 for a Tunze kit.

I modded a 1200 for my 40 breeder and it was way to much flow. I bought another MJ900 and moved the impeller in to that pump.. I superglues neo magnets on the back of the pump so I could mount it easy . I can even move the pump around and it wont fall while its running to place it in the proper position.

Overall really happy with the results. Im just trying to figure out a way to make a Home Made Stream Rock now.LOL

Hi 120: hum, I can't quite picture what you're describing. Even though you cut off the nozzle from the impeller cover, there's still just a hole approx the size of the nozzle on one side of the impeller cover, so I'm not sure how it could hit behind the pump on the glass, assuming the hole is pointing towards the middle of the tank.

Here's a link to a post where the author has a short video of the mod in action: http://www.michiganreefers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=202970&postcount=1

I'm going to give it a try myself since I have 2 extra impeller covers...nothing to loose since I'm not using them anyways. Maybe once I do it, I'll find out what you're referring to...

Thanks,

rob

NuclearReefs, where did you get the neo magnets? My tank is acrylic so will need magnets for sure for placing them on the back wall.

I got these

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=16

Part Number RX054E

and BE CAREFUL,I cannot stress this enough.. A friend of mine broke his finger with a set a little bigger than these just dorking around.., you will snap your finger and end up with a Nasty Bruise
They have about 54Lbs of torque on them. I bought 4 and it was like 20$ with shipping

They came with a plastic washer which i superglued to the one on the outside of the tank....

Thanks, Yes I will be very careful. I have a strong magnet that I use for keeping the tank panes clean. Was told never to put the 2 together or would have to ship them to get them unstuck!
