MJ mod workshop?

OK so I talked to Manfred. Here are the prices.
1200-$15.99
900-$13.99
600-$12.99
400-$10.99
The only catch is that he has to order 150 of these pumps to get the price break. This is basically his wholesale cost on them. If anyone can find them cheaper let us know. Otherwise I think this is the best deal. He said he can keep some of them if we can't get 150 orders but we will need to get somewhat close. If need be I can take more also.

150 is a lot :D

Here is my shroud. What do you guys think? ;)
I'm using the 1.75" impeller and the only thing that could house this impeller is the 1.5 coupler, which is a pain to cut holes/slots. So I came up with this. Much easier to make and the cut are very clean :D ..

This is my impeller. I removed the plastic inside the magnet and clued the carbon rod to it.

I need to get some SCH 80 1.5 pipe to make this fit better on the pump. SCH 40 is a bit big.

Nice use of a rain gutter mesh (if that's what it is) Elite. :)

You would definitely have a better fit with 1.5" SCH80 pipe for the MJ. In fact it would be a perfect fit that you would have to ditch the black rubber O-ring on tyhe MJ or it won't fit.

yeah it is. but it seems like the owner is trying to help. MD probably sells 150 a day, so for him to come up with those prices are incredible. did you look at those prices? it is about 20% less than MD!

150 is a ton, if we have to order 150 of each. How is the break down Matt, do we have to get 150 of each? IF so, we have to come up with $2100 for the MJ1200's alone. I think banking that many powerheads by this club, would definitly be stepping on sponsors toes.

I will buy some of the MJ, pending what model everyone wants. Matt, do you need 150 of each type, or total?

:D

I don't think the club will be buying 150 powerheads. :D

fat walrus,
I'm just saying 150 is a lot of pumps and that's all. I know Manfred. He's a great guy. This is not the first time he helps BAR. I give him as much support as I can. :)

Gresham, I think 150 is the total.

Anyway, I'll take 1-1200 and 1-900. Should we post a thread in MARS to see if anybody there interested?

150 total is still too much for this club. Just going off this thread, I'd say we need less then 30 ;)

No, we shouldn't post in another clubs forum about our DIY build.

No, I'm saying if somebody there interested in buying some powerheads :D ... Just to help out with the "group buy" ... Just an idea :bum: ..

I think this really becomes how much of a roke [A]** [R]eefer you really are, I mean come on $18.95 (marine depot price) vs $15.99, give me a F'ing break, yeah ok there's shipping charges but if you get a mini-buy with local reefers you can really minimize that (not that it'd be that much to start with!) Bottom line is it's really not worth the effort to put that together to save $3 on a damn powerhead.

150 is the total.
Well I personally could take like ten or so easily. I think most people could use at least two to four. Plus Manfred said he would take some also. If he takes 20 and I take 10 that leaves 120. That is still a lot. If there were 30 people that take 4 each we would be set. It would be hard to get 30 people that want 4 each. I think he could probably match the MD price if there were less than 150. I think that's probably about what he pays wholesale. I also agree that saving a couple of bucks isn't a big deal.

hey, i called natural life today and talked to manfred. he is interested in the idea of selling the modified maxijets. i was mainly hoping maybe i can buy a few from him without having to do it myself, so maybe ask him if he would sell the modified ones. he also said that if you guys fall short of the 150, he will match MD prices IF he can. i won't participate, but i will buy about 6-10 from him to add to your total if it will help.

i'll definitely pick up 4 mj's, i'm trying to figure out what size i want to use..

for my 75 i have 2x820 and 1x1100 seios for a mixed reef, sps dominated on top.

for my class 46 gallon have 2x620 for mixed reef.

aiming to start with the modded mj's for my 75 gallon, thinking 3 600's or 900's, figure 3x8W=24W which is 60% less energy and heat in the tank.. and for class tank just 1x900 (or is this too much?)..

any recommendations on which prop to use based on above? would like a bit more flow than currently in tank, but want to be reliable/stable so minimal problems in terms of potential not restarting/vibration/etc. i'm definitely going to go through d's thread again, but wondering if folks have recommendations?

OP,

For a 72g tank, you would be good with 2 MJ900's pushing Octura 1435 props. A MJ1200 spinning the larger 3004 Dumas (1.75") prop would be a bit much for that tank even if it's SPS dominated.

It also depends a lot on what you keep in your tank too.

Here are the props in terms of flow (from least to most) in my experience.

1.25" Dumas (good for mixed or LPS and softies tanks 55g and under)

1.25" Hobbico Nitro Hammer (good for mixed or LPS and softies tanks 75g and under)

1.38" Octura 1435 (good for mixed and SPS dominated tanks 90g and under. Might need some creative mounting for LPS and softies dominated tanks though)

1.75" 3004 Dumas (This is the king of flow IMO/IME. Excellent for larger SPS dominated tanks > 90g)

This is just a general guideline though as the flow requirements also depends a lot on specific tanks (custom dimension, substrate type, and whatnot)
