MJ mod workshop?

i'll definitely pick up 4 mj's, i'm trying to figure out what size i want to use..

for my 75 i have 2x820 and 1x1100 seios for a mixed reef, sps dominated on top.

for my class 46 gallon have 2x620 for mixed reef.

aiming to start with the modded mj's for my 75 gallon, thinking 3 600's or 900's, figure 3x8W=24W which is 60% less energy and heat in the tank.. and for class tank just 1x900 (or is this too much?)..

any recommendations on which prop to use based on above? would like a bit more flow than currently in tank, but want to be reliable/stable so minimal problems in terms of potential not restarting/vibration/etc. i'm definitely going to go through d's thread again, but wondering if folks have recommendations?

3 MJ's in your 75g would be a bit much IMO. Maybe 2 MJ600 or MJ900 spinning the 1.38" Octura 1435 propellers.

The class tank you can have one MJ600 or MJ900 w/the same prop above and that should be fine.

This all is also assuming that they will be mixed tanks leaning more on SPS as there will still be a lot of flow going on in there.

If your tanks are softies or LPS dominated, you may want to use a smaller propeller (1.25" Hobbico Nitro Hammer--- some drilling will be required to fit the propeller onto the rigid tube though)

I don't see why you couldn't. But those prices are kinda crazy just for a magnet holder. They cost more than the pump even.

Why not make your own?

As it is designed, NO, you can't. You need to MOD it. It is designed to slip into the slot provided on the maxijet. Well, you can use it of you mount the pump in a way that reduced its flow. You can glue the thing on though, and it would work great, but for $25 you can do better.

Do you guys know if I will be able to use the Maxijet magnet holder from MD with this mod?

I would use an epoxy due to the vibration, but Goop would probably work. I have a few Maxi's glued to algrea scrapers. There is a guy on RC that sells this really low profile mag scraper, that works perfect, but I forgot who he is. He makes them.

I was thinking of using a couple of the mag float I have laying around. I have a 360 and a couple of the 125 size one. Would I be able to use the smaller one on the Maxijet? Thinking of using the bigger one on a Seio 820.

Really, they should!! You looking in the right place, they don't always keep it next to the other PVC.

I looked and asked the people who work there. They only have short pieces (3"-24") of 1/2"-1" dia. I have a bunch of 1" pipe already.

D.
I did. They only have small one. No 1 1/2". I will check out HD at Greatmall.

dswong01,
Where is that at?

Cool thanks guys... I just call the store in San Jose and they do have it in stock. They sell 20' minimum at $1.30 a foot so that is not bad.

Group buy anyone???

20 feet @ $1.30 per foot ? :eek1:

You can order a 5 foot 1.5" SCH 80 pipe from mcmaster.com for less than that. And the pipe form mcmaster is dark grey almost the exact shade as the MJ colour.

we will see how much shipping cost from mcmaster.... stupid website doesn't say how much.
I like to make my own.. The only way you can learn. :)
Thanks D...

Elite, just do the test cap version of the shroud. Then you can just use schedule 40 pipe. They even have short lengths of 1 1/2 ABS and test caps at HD. Super cheap.
