MJ prop mod invades GIRS

Covey - What did you use for the housing around the Propellor? In the thread they used PVC and cut slots in it so it could connect to the twist lock on the housing but it looks like yours is just wrapped around and ziptied! Looks much easier. What did you put on the end of it to keep the prop centered? Can you post a pic of it head on, so we can see the end?

The mod keeps evolving to the best of my knowledge this is the most current version of the MJ1200 mod.
The housing is:
1.5" test cap
1.5" coupling
1.5" pvc(real short piece just to put the other to together.)
A piece of plastic gutter guard from lowe's
and yes wire ties to hold the gutter guard on.

The slotted design from the first thread can't pass enough water for the Dumas 1.75" prop. You could careful make it really really ful of slots. At first I tired drilling a ton of holes. Still didn't pass enough water. Used the Dremel and I side cut bit and basically just cut the housing wide open. There is only 3 strips of PVC supporting the front half of the housing. I then added the gutter guard to keep the snail and fish out of it. The gutter guard passes more than enough water.

Keeping the prop centered. I cut a strip of PVC out of the left over pipe and drilled a hole in the center of that. I then assembled the pump and held the cross brace in place with my hand. Plugged it in and I had a little room to work with so I centered it until it ran nice a quite even dry. Then used the superglue to glue it in place.

I've read about these mods. If I needed more flow I think I would definitely try one. They seem pretty powerful. You may want to consider using a ceramic shaft instead of stainless as the stainless will rust.

The original MJ shaft is stainless steel and you will get a few years out of each shaft. You still have to take it a part to clean it so you can keep a eye on it.

I don't know where to find ceramic but it would be hard to cut and would likely crack at some point because it like 5-6" long and not heavily supported by much magnet structure.

If could find it I would go with titainium but I have no idea where to get that.

I used a carbon fiber shaft for the rod in mine. The nice thing about using the carbon fiber shaft is if the size is a little to big like mine was you can chuck it in a drill and spin it with some sand paper held around it, until you get the exact diameter you need.

I got a carbon fiber rod and a prop at the hobby town in CR for less than $10.

From what I read the MJ900 is the powerhead to go with because it is so efficient @ only 12watts or something.

jvonthn is right. I said ceramic but I think it was carbon fiber rods that people were using from hobby shops for this mod.

Is there a way to fuse the gutter guard to the frame on the inside so that zip ties could be eliminated, and give a cleaner look? Would superglue do the trick if the plastic and pvc was scored or roughed up?

I really want to do one of these, but I have no use for one. That kind of flow in my little 12g would create a sandstorm like no other. I think it's a very cool project, though.

I don't think super glue would strong enough. Maybe if you wire tied then exopied it then clipped the wire tie off or maybe added some larger piece of PVC over the ends. Like I said this was just a first attempt I am going to make the next ones neater.

If you read thru that whole monster thread the main group of Mod'ers working on this stopped using the carbon fiber because it wears out to quick and is noiser than SS.

Every shaft materal has a drawback I guess you just have to pick the one you like.

So, who wants to keep this thread alive? I'm gonna keep it up here so I can build one when I have the time. Don't want this thread to get lost :)

If you click on the link at the bottom of your screen that says "subscribe to this thread" that will place it in your "my rc" profile so you can look it up anytime you want.

:strooper:

I think the maxi-jet original shaft is metric. The carbon fiber one that are in the link. I think have to be sanded down slightly. The SS shaft I got from the hardware store were 1/8" and were slightly loose but it works.

The best prop for the MJ1200 is a Dumas 1.75" with a 3/16" hole. You use smaller props for the smaller maxis. The RC members are always coming up with better props to use on each size maxi so if your moding a smaller one your best off PM'ing DH in the main "Hitchhicker" thread to get the updated list of the lastest suggested props.

Well a stumble step I came home today and the MJ wasn't running. Redid part of the housing to take some of the play out of the original and got it running again. If I deem these unreliable I might just pony up the money for the voritechs.

Quite a few acros don't take kindly to have pumps out.

Hey Billy did they have the props in at Hobbytown?

Do you think we could make a few housung at the machine shop you where talking about?

Bob I got your Maxi from Billy how old is it?

I will see about using the machine shop, I will try to get over there next week.

THey will have the props in on Wednesday they think. He said there has been several people in looking for them.

Could anyone that has built one of the new mods throw a parts list and some direction on here? I noticed the plan has come a long way and the mods are now starting to look like a tunze.

He is getting in the 1.75 Dumas props. Hopefully who ever gets there first does not buy them all.

You are more then welcome to drop by the house and see what I am doing on mine. I am at 4050 Keeneland Ct in Bettendorf. It is just northwest of the highschool. If you decide to come over use mapquest, I am in the binding in the phonebook map. I will be home everynight this week after around 4pm.

I may have to take you up on your offer. Now that we are kicked out of AE I find myself with a few extra hours of free time every night... :p :bum:

Feel free to stop by. I should be in the garage trying to finish up the stand and canopy for my frag tank for most of the week, with minor diversions to the prop mod occasionally.

The additional free time has been nice, I was thinking of getting a part time job to fill the LFS void with.

Uh oh what did you do at AE Atticus? You know your not supposed to pet the fish right? :)

Well, thank god this weekend is over. It was the last weekend of my single parent days and that means I can start to tinker with things like this after of course I get all my gardenwork, lawnwork all done.
