I have two 6101's in my 90 gallon (36x24x24") tank. I see some people are cutting of the small shroud in order to get a wider flow spread. Besides the obvious of ruining the front of my 6101's, is there other reasons I shouldn't do this? Don't get me wrong, I love my pumps, but since my tank is smaller than some, I thought maybe a wider spread might be better. I would imagine if it didn't work would be out $50 or so for a new piece. What are peoples thoughts on this? Worth the try or stay with what I have.

Dan, for wider flow you can change the shroud to 6200 instead of cutting your 6101... You will not notice much except the lack of directional...

If you need wider flow the best solution is the 6200.13 shroud, but I think you just need gentler flow and all you have to do is swap the 24V jumper on your power supply to the 15V jumper that was included.

Roger, i have read that people do 3 different mods to the 6101 units to get a more broad flow.
1. Shorten the very end of the shroud
2. Remove every other tooth in the shroud around the whole perimeter
3. Replace the propeller unit

Can you comment on your experience or thoughts on these? Replacing the propeller unit with a 6200 series sounds interesting. I know the flow length will be reduced by any mods. I know there are many reefers trying to get a broader flow like that other PH company. :rollface:

1) Might work, very modest impact though.
2) This won't do anything on a 6101, this only allows more water in.
3) This could shorten pump life and I would not recommend it unless downsizing for reduced flow. At a minimum you could burn out the power supply if you upsized. This would only increase pressure anyway. You would want a wider outlet, not a bigger prop to widen flow. The 6200.130 outlet is wider but your tank is only 2ft wide so having 30" wide flow would not have much of any impact the tank will just channel it to 2ft.

I have both the 6101 and a few 6201s and the shroud mouth is not that much bigger. I mean, it may be 3/8" at max. Does it really broaden the flow output by something that is measurable? I switched them, and it didnt really seem to change much. I dont think it would be worth $50. Am i crazy?

It won't make a difference in your size tank, a 6080.130 shroud is 50mm outlet, a 6200.130 is 63mm outlet, this translates into a 6101 having 7ft by 2ft flow column and a 6201 having a 7ft by 30" column. Within 2ft the flow has reached its maximum diameter. With a 2ft tank the 30" flow is channeled back to 2ft so there is no difference except a bit more turbulance and slightly less pressure. If the tank was wider or longer you would see a definite difference. Using the 15V jumper is probably the best solution.
