Modern Reef Aquariums

Alright! Let's make it even greater, keep the ideas/images coming...

We've seen lots of examples of modern *design* in aquaria/surround environment, I'd like to see more *function*. Examples of technology that is effectively unique/cutting edge and serves an aesthetic functionality. Going back to Elos, I'm a sucker for them, here's their EVO light compliments of Flyingphish:

It contains a 150w MH with 3 filters that can adjust the color temperature controlled by a computer to simulate the different times of the day. I believe it has LEDs for moonlight too that run in phase with the moon. Here are examples of the different "spectrums" achievable with a 10k MH bulb:

Simple yet advanced, effective, and to some tastes, attractive. Perhaps not a textbook "modern" example, but why limit yourself to rules?

The Elos B2 controller probably qualifies, but I don't want to sound like an Elos salesperson, so do your own research... ;)

Man, I NEED to set up an Elos aquarium soon! It drives me nuts to see these gorgeous tanks...In a good way of course :D

The simplicity really is so advanced and fresh. Especially in aquaria where you usually see complicated and busy.

Which ones?

Im guessing you are talking about these fixtures here:

Although personally I don't see it. They have a certain non metallic look to them for sure...I guess you could say plastic but that is an aesthetic choice (one that I love) I think to keep them looking sleek and simple.

Or are you looking at other lights?

The only other ones I have seen in this thread anyways are very expensive looking aluminum pendants with built in LCD monitors...Not exactly cheap looking :D

Only reason I ask is that I see the exact opposite when I look at most all Elos products, especially the lighting. It looks pretty expensive to me.

Here's another example of aqua life in a modern setting:

Seems more like an example of "i have a ton of money" than anything else.

Give me a ton of loot and i'll blow the TOTM category out of existence.

The key is i need to be able to spend a lot of time and money on it (the same is true of almost anyone that posts here frequently). The problem is many of us quite simply lack the capital and the time.

This doesn't diminish the accomplishments of our more affluent brothers and sisters. It's just a sad fact of life in this hobby. IF you have tons of money and don't need to show up to work 9-5 every day, you can build a wonderful tank.

I find it far more impressive when someone with a good (not great) job, kids and time constraints somehow manages to build an incredible system. It's a far greater accomplishment.

If i win the powerball tomorrow, i'm going to win TOTM. So are you and every other person that spends time posting here.

Kind of harsh don't you think? He didn't just blow a load of cash and put it up overnight. He's done a lot of work himself and his ideas are fantastic. He even saved up for many years to upgrade to a Bubble King. This isn't exactly a hobby where you can set up a TOTM with the change found under dad's couch. Might want to take your criticism down a notch.

Either way, this is no doubt a modern aquarium and I think an absolutely astounding one at that.

Richard Bilow

You know a year or so ago, I was looking at aquariums on the net and came across the work of Richard Bilow. I just realized his art would quite often be considered modern. For those you you who do not know who he is, he the aquarium designer who created Aquatic Art.

I hope this is ok for me to be doing...if I am not suppose to be posting someones work or information, please let me know and I will delete this post...I just get very inspired by the art he creates!

Ok...Taken from his site "...creating aquarium and terrarrium environments with his passion for art, architecture, and design, Bilow now takes the concept of aquariums as art to new levels, through Aqua-Terra Studios.

Here is where the artist, designer and aquatc installations specialist continues to develop his innovative blend of sculpture, art and aquarium design."

And now for a few examples. Some are less than modern but the designs are so unique and beautiful, I could not resist :)

I agree quick... this thread is about the design elements and not the costs associated with these aquariums. lets get back on topic

I don't know if my aquarium could be called modern, but I did my best to minimalize the stand and all equipment. I like the TOTMs that look like they blend perfectly into the room they are in, so thats what I tried to do.

That tank's presentation is totally amazing!

It's modern and it's beautiful and it's brilliant.

My point is that it's not even close to possible for most people to even have an opportunity to compete with it.

I think i gave ample props for it. My reservation is that the average reef enthusiast has no chance of making such a thing.

In short, i'm really jealous. I would love to have the opportunity to compete in a reef contest where everyone has the same amt of time and money to put into their system.

I'm sure everyone woudl agree there. Problem is this just isn't a cheap hobby. My wife would be happy to attest to that.

I consider my 10 modern, it has no stand, no wires showing, and no pumps showing. All hidden in the mech room behind it.

It's kind of messy right now while I grow out some frags but when i set it up my vision was to create a museum looking piece.
Here it is shortly after setup over a year ago

I LOVE this idea! :)

OK, so I was so excited to have found this thread. I started at page 1, and worked my way through. There are some amazing setups! My enthusiasm was curbed after reading JimKelley's comments.

My thoughts

- I have NO IDEA where you are coming up with the idea that this thread is a contest. I view this thread as an avenue to share a certain design concept linking living and aquaria

- I work 9-5 just as you do, as does my wife. In fact, we often put in work weeks >40 hours. I want to win Powerball just as much as you do! :)

- Do you HONESTLY think that when my wife and I remodelled our home that we did so with the intention of winning TOTM? Come on, give me a break! Does that even make sense? We wanted to remodel our home to fit our style, nothing more!

- Please don't be mad about our kitchen. Both my wife's and my parents are uneducated. We both grew up broke, but managed through grad school. Is it WRONG to enjoy the fruits of many years of hard work?

PLEASE, this forum is an avenue for many reef enthusiasts from around the world to admire each other's tanks, to learn, and to share knowledge. There is nothing about this forum that is a contest.

Please take this thread and forum for what it is...

(Much thanks to those of you who supported me :) )
