Modern Reef Aquariums

I am still looking to improve or at least change my lighting so that I can loose my canopy. I thought this might be the perfect thread to ask for ideas...

I was thinking of doing something like a floor/reading lamp if I could find one big enough to house a 250 watt MH socket and bulb. Any ideas? They are quite large!

My tank only has one 250 watt MH. I have it set up so that its mounted in the far left hand side of the canopy and shines down across the tank diagonally. It leaks a LOT of light out of the tank still though and I think a spotlight type reflector would work so much better for the look Im after. This tank only has a few soft corals on the left hand side, so having enough light is not really a problem.

Anyways, hope this is not way off topic but I want something a bit more "modern" looking and preferably a floor lamp. Like I said though, finding one with a huge reflector might be hard.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yeah thats what I have been looking into actually but its been hard to fins anything with a shade or reflector big enough for a 250watt MH bulb and socket. Well there was one but its shade is made of rice paper...hahaha...doesn't seem like a good idea

Maybe a nice Stainless Steel Arco Floor Lamp might be the way to go. I have seen some with huge shades. I was hope not to spend hundreds for this project but I think that might work perfectly.

Well, if "Modern" means (1) very modern systems / rimless tanks with state of the art equipment and (2) fully integrated design with the entire home...then I think my tank might qualify. Its 97g custom built into my kitchen island with cabinetry custom-matched to all my furniture and cabinets.. not a "modern" look but "modern" in concept. Very little visible plumbing, visible 4 sides. I especially love the last photo - how the reflection of the rear side mirrors on the black granite countertop. Thanks to J Hale for the lovely photos and Greenwich Aquaria for the custom build! Enjoy the photos... (PS photos taken 6 months ago - LOTS more coral growth...) susan..... very nice set up..... more contemporary than modern, in my somewhat limite view.... but truly stunning regardless..... I don't like it, I LOVE it..... what are the tank dims?

thanks Matt! It is 30" wide, 30" tall and 29" deep. All the eq is neatly tucked away below and the cabinet maker rigged the canopy on two hinges which lift up on both sides so I can get in to clean, do maintenance etc. Here are two photos of guts / top (and another side shot)

Have you seen the Isamu Noguchi tea cups and saucers? I always thought those were very cool. I have always wanted one of his tables as well. Very nice stuff.

Glassbox's tank and stand are cool (I've got the same size on order from Deep Sea Aquatics), but the stand looks sorta impractical. If only the back end is open, and you keep your equipment under it, I can't see how you can service it. What's the trick? Were you born without collar bones ?

I think these two are the best of the thread, with the 10-gallon winning. Just awesome. That little 10-gallon is a one of a kind and defines modern to me. I am surprised it seemed to get ignored.

I think these define modern aquarium design. And Elos wins for brand.

how can the wall hold suck tank with weight like that. Even if a small brace on the bottom for plate, that's a lot of weight.

about 3/8" or 1/2" metal plate reinforce with 2x6, similar to roof with ledge. at 8lbs per gal should weigh about 75-85 lbs max. good thing is no live rocks just clams and few corals. the is very cool design

I dont see any problem with that weight on a wall. a typicall wall mounted bookshelf could have WAY more weight than that. or a grandmother clock.
