Modify Pre-Built Canopy - Will It Work

As an option for making a canopy that is high enough for MH lights, what do you think about modifying an existing, pre-made canopy (say one of the AGA Oak ones), and adding a strip to the bottom to raise it up 4-6 inches?

Will that work well, or is it likely to be rickity and ugly?

What I've seen done here before was to cut rectangular holes in the top of the canopy, on each side, sized correctly to just hold a pendant fixture.
Looked really sharp, and very functional. You could even build some kind of frame, to hold the pendant in place, out of trim.
