Modify Tunze 9410 Skimmer output?

Hello,

I have a 9410 skimmer that has been running for about 1 week.

I was wondering how the output works with the fitting and whether it is needed. I was thinking about trying to modify the output to feed into a bubble sponge that I already have and save some space. Right now the sock is sorta squished in there and I think it makes more water noise than anything else.

I was thinking of using PVC or something to take the output and direct it to the sponge.

Has anyone tried this?

Any thoughts would be great! Thanks!

I also have a 9410 and just put it in sump last night. I had been running it in the garage for 5 days to let it settle down before the transfer. I here what you're saying about the noise and splashing! The output assembly is primarily just for micros because this skimmer puts out an insane amount of air for the size of the body. It should settle down quite a bit but if you decide to remove the assembly then you can order a replacement sponge online. The ASM skimmers have the perfect sponge for this. I have a mini G on mothballs and while I'm letting things settle with the stock assembly for now, I will use the sponge if things don't quiet down. If you have an Mag drive pump, they usually come with a round intake filter with sponge that would fit perfectly as well.

BTW

The Tunze 9410 skimmer has really surprised me so far. Awsome air and a nice foam head. Better than my ATB or Bubble king! It does take longer than other skimmers to bed in though so be patient if it hasn't settled down yet. My perfect water level is 7 inches.

I have the same skimmer also. It took quite awhile to settle down but now it is very quiet, the water flow has smoothed out no surging like it did when new. I would just give it some time you will be very happy with it.

One other thing the standard sock on the old models was 50 microns and can be a pain, i would suggest picking up some 200 micron filter socks they work much better and are more flexible so it wouldn't be squished in your sump.

The only mod I would make is changing the bag to 200 microns, we plan to make this change ourselves down the road. They come with 50 microns and this backs up and clogs easily. 150-200 microns seems about perfect and traps far more bubbles than foam. The pipe is fairly critical in function, it keeps the water level internally at the right level.
