Mohawk/National Grid Power Outage

Another power outage compliments from Mohawk/National grid. At least one outage a month & on average two. Did I mention they SUCK big times?!?

Chris, A UPS will not help me through several hours of power outtage. However I do have a backup generator currently being wired in for backup. With at least one power outtage a month I cannot risk my reef tanks. Much less the contents in the fridge...

Plandy, winter will be here soon............ you could always put the food in a cooler outside , or bury it in the snow :p

True, but the corals won't care one bit for the snow. In any case I shall have my new generator on standby this weekend. It's a heck lot easier to leave everything in the fridge :D and just flip the alternate power switch.

If u had the money battieries a wall of Marine battieries, like u use for solar panels would give u enough juice to power everything for a while.....

dont know how much it would cost though...

That would be my plan. Have several marine batteries & an inverter. As long as I can keep my main sump pump running, heater & possibly a maxi-jet mod powerhead (low wattage) going I should be safe.

I haven't had the time to reseach how practical a UPS system would be. I'll look into it one of these nites. lol

My pops has a 60 ft yacht. Have several inverters and extra marine yacht batteries if need be.

I really haven't given it much thought. Bad i know  I'll have to develop a plan of attack soon. I'm so use to FOWLR So it wasn't as high of a concern. Was always manageable.

Marine batteries with solar charger takes it notch higher in terms of energy self-sufficiency. However it may or may not be the optimum choice for emergency use. You still have to deal with sunshine to keep the batteries charged. Batteries & solar panels , to lesser extent, have specific shelf life. As they age they drain quicker & hold less charge. My preferred solution was to get a 2500 watt portable gas generator with built in inverter & energy conserving governor. It runs close to 12 hours on 3 gallons of gas at half load, rain or shine. Best of all at only 65lbs I can haul this generator from my main residence to my camping site or any other offsite for instant, cheap electrical access.

Either way any preparation for emergency power outtage is better than none. I think everyone should be prepared. Otherwise you're just a sitting duck waiting for the big bang.

" you could sell off your tank, and get out of the hobby"

Can you imagine life without a coral reef tank? :sad1:
