Try to keep this 16" tube all the way instead of 12" that you want to do. i hope you have space in the sump for the height but it will be better than shorter one .if you can do the Funnel con shape about 4" and the neck about 8" length you will be around 30" high but if you have the space for that you will be able to play with the Sicce pump or the Laguna pump and you will get a very nice skimming result . if you don't have space do the funnel about 2" high and try to keep the neck 8" ... remember don't cut the neck until you test the pump with the skimmer in external sump like that you can see exactly where is the best point to trim it....
Well I dont have room for 30" First thing on the to do list is machine the piece of pvc for the bottom of the collection cup.
The skimmer isnt going to be a monster as It is for my 57g rimless. I figure it will handle 700 to 900 lph with a 4 to 4.25 in neck.
Once I get the machining done on the piece for the bottom of the collection cup I plan to work on the base and bubble plate of the skimmer. And from thier I can figure out the height of the skimmer body and then the neck size.
So you think the neck should be 8 in long? I guess i ll have to play around with it. I may just put some water in a tote to play around with it. I can just dump my nog from my tank in there. lol Thanks for the suggestions. Gives me more to think about.
Skimmer never collect everything you have 57 gallon tank and when the skimmer will work you can make easy test to see that i am right about that ......if you put hang on filter on top of the tank with white filter floss you will see that after 5 minute the filter become dirty and get into brown color like you nog color.... so as much as you collect there it will be better.
For the bubble diffuser plate i don't know the holes Dia. you want to do but when you do the holes give some space incase you will need to re drill to wider holes if you will see to mach back pressure on the pump....
As for the neck always longer neck better since you able to tune the skimmer more.... but it's also depend on the pump and the air/water flow.... because of that i suggest not to trim it just after you run the skimmer... you can see in this image a long neck that i add on high skimmer ....on this skimmer it was hard to control on the foam with standard neck size and i change the neck from 8" to 17" and i was able to play with the foam and skim produce wet/dry with a better result.... i also increase the neck on my other skimmer (you can see it inside the stand)and the result become better to.
mojo i see a problem your gonna occur when gluing that stuff it's extruded....optix to be exact your most likely gonna see some crazing in there be prepared to prolly use 16 or 40/42 preferably....not sure what you got or plan to use when you weld it all up.....but it's something to think about anyways..
No biggie then....it does get kinda tricky welding cast to extruded and making it pretty...extruded is fine for your project, strength wise, it just sucks to machine and glue/weld...
thanks for the input. I am still not sure how I am going to attatch the pvc to the acrylic though. Any thoughts on this? As far as I see it, I can glue or weld it. Nit sure what glue to use. Weld on. I am going to play around on scrap first.
lol I did have it on the lathe to mill down the outside. Waiting on the neck piece so I have the exact OD to mill the ID on the neck. hopefully will be able to do more tomorrow. Been busy today.
Personally having used 16 and 40 before, there's no way I would use 16. 40, although slightly more of a pain to deal with, is a much better product especially when gluing pvc and acrylic pieces together. I used about 1/2 cup of 40 this week on various projects
thanks for the input everyone. I still havent gotten the pieces for the neck. Once I get them I can machine out the neck.
The neck is pretty heavy. And it added a extra cost to my build. I Went to take it of my table and it slipped out of my hand. Caught the edge of the protective glass and broke it. The neck is still in one piece but their is another $90 to replace the glass on the table. lol.
I am also throwing around the ideas for the base of the skimmer. I can just put a plate on the bottom or make a small box that would help make the skimmer a little taller. One thing at a time. I didnt really plan on putting a ton of air into this one. somewhere between 700 and 900 lph. I will probably try it out the way it is first and just pres fit it together and go from there.
OK OK a couple pics to show progess on the neck. I did get my Cone body in yesterday as well. Thanks Victor (ATB) for that. I had to twist his arm but my cone skimmer will have a ATB 840 1.5 body. woot.
Ok back to my cylinder skimmer.
