Money Cowrie Sucessfully Spawned!!!

I have a female Money Cowrie that has successfully mated with a male and has been sitting on her eggs for almost 6 days now. Does anyone know anything about their egg cycle? Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi fijiblue,

The female sits on the eggs for about a week, give or take a day or two. They will then hatch, but it's almost impossible to raise them in an aquarium due to their extended planktonic stage. It's been done, but you'd have to have some sophisticated equipment to do it. You'd need the ability to isolate the veligers from your display tank, and you'd have to be able to provide them with whatever food they needed until they were large enough to graze, and unfortunately I can't tell you what that is. If you live in the Pacific, you might try pumping in fresh sea water, but you'd still face the problem of keeping the veligers in the tank rather than letting them escape into your overflow. Neat thing to witness, in any case.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks for the info Don! I do have the ability to remove them as they are on a MJ1200...I am going to try them in a 2.5gal with heater and minimum bubble along with phyto and bacto and see what happens.

Wouldn't you know it...I go to remove them this morning after I got the holding tank ready and they already hatched! I wonder if the female is prone to use the same area to lay the eggs again. I guess I will just have to wait until next time!
